Extra Credit Limerick
« on: May 05, 2015, 11:30:37 AM »

I'm giving final exams right now for my Live Sound Class and wrote a Limerick hint for an electrical component we might use on stage. See if you can guess what it is. If you get it right that's an extra 2 points on your final exam grade.

There once was a player named Frank
Who’s sound on the stage really cranked
We spun the big knob, and went on with the job
And the sound mix no longer did stank

Compressor?

Or a big wrench upside the head?

Variac®?  Have seen guitar amps alternately feed too much and too little supply voltage to give it "that sound."

That was my first thought-but they are not a common tool  on stage.

I saw one once that had a steering wheel for a knob.  Yes it was large

Getting Warmer.... (that's a hint in and of itself).

Yup.... and I rewrote this just a tiny bit to include the guitar player hint:

There once was a player named Frank
Who’s guitar on the stage really cranked
We spun the big knob, and went on with the job
And the sound mix no longer did stank

Our old lead guitarist played though an Alessandro amp, which was basically a 50 watt marshall design. He always had it cranked, but luckily there was an on-board attenuator. Helped tremendously!

That's my vote as well. Variac. So, without being in your class I think your limerick sucks.

Have the class try this one for some extra credit.
