Variac®?  Have seen guitar amps alternately feed too much and too little supply voltage to give it "that sound."

That was my first thought-but they are not a common tool  on stage.

I saw one once that had a steering wheel for a knob.  Yes it was large

Yup.... and I rewrote this just a tiny bit to include the guitar player hint:

Our old lead guitarist played though an Alessandro amp, which was basically a 50 watt marshall design. He always had it cranked, but luckily there was an on-board attenuator. Helped tremendously!

That's my vote as well. Variac. So, without being in your class I think your limerick sucks.

Old mother Hubbard went to the "     " to fetch her poor doggie a "    ". But when she bent over, Rover "    " her. For he had a "     " of his own.

Two out of the dozen students in my Live Sound Lecture class got it right on the Tuesday exam. I'm also using this for my Live Sound Practicum class today with another eight students and will report how well they did. We demonstrated a power soak on a tube guitar amp early in the semester, so we'll see how well they retained the info.

Yes, I'm officially a "professor" which always cracks up my wife when she hears one of my students refer to me that way.
