I'm looking at putting together a small rig for rock shows 500-1,000 people and am considering 2 TX1152's and 2 TX2181's a side.  I wonder what experiences you may have with either of the above and if there is anything else around this price point I should be considering.  Any comments or opinions greatfully received!

I'm sure you'll get lots of suggestions and opinions, (and additional questions) but I think you'd be lucky to do 500 people with that rig at decent volumes....forget 1000 (unless it's very modest levels).

I will say I've not heard any of the TX mains and subs, but I own the TX 12" monitors and like them alot.  They are small, light, sound good and can get quite loud.

I own a basic Phoenix rig ((2)PX2152/(2)PX2181) and would really be pushed to cover 500 folks at rock levels...and these things get loud.  It will take quite the system to do what you want.

You might want to look into EV's QRX line, Phoenix line, or JBL SRX.  JTR speakers are also worth a look.

I use the TX2152s (dual 15 cabs) for mains for audiences up to around 300 people indoors with no problems. They get really loud and the amp (QSC PLX-3602) *sometimes* lights the -10 led on the front.  I wouldn't go less than the dual 15s for 500 people for sure but You would want some at least 2 per side of tops and subs to cover more than that, IMO.

As far as the performance goes I think they sound great. I often get complements about how clear the vocals are and how nice they sound.

It was my understanding EV no longer makes the Phoenix or QRX series...is this true? Sorry, I dont know much about EV.

In comparison to say, JBL, where does the TX line stand?

Both lines are still in the line up. Tour X is probably around the JBL MRX line.

Oh ok. All of the main websites I look at do not carry Phoenix or QRX (musiciansfriend, sweetwater, americanmusic, etc)

Thats because you have to be a special Phoenix signed dealer to sell it.

Usually for rock shows of 600 I end up on a Turbosound Flashlight system (2 per side) and 4 TSW21s per side. I would doubt the TX series could keep up with them on shows that size, sometimes it would be nice to have even more. I personally own EV QRX153s  and QRX115s, They are my favorite portable boxes. If I were you id lean more toward 2 QRx212s and 3 good dual 18s per side, still wouldnt use it at a 1000 person rock show but it should have some guts for shows just below that.

IMO two of these subs is about right for a bar gig.  Scaling them up to a 500-guest show would be pointless given the many superior subwoofer choices that pack more output and low-frequency response into a similar amount of truck/floor space.

The TX1152, I don't know.  Bidding 1000-guest jobs, you are going to be competing against providers with significantly better boxes.  So if you get those gigs, you will probably only get them on price, and probably only get them once before the customer realizes they screwed up by hiring you.  No offense intended; it's just not going to measure up to what others will offer the same events.  Ignore any analysis in this thread of whether or not it can be made to work, and think about it from a business perspective; and you will have your answer.

Thanks for peoples opinions above, perhaps I didn't phrase my question very well, I'm more interested in opinions about the sound quality of the EV's as against what else around this price from other manufacturers (both new or perhaps secondhand).  I don't want to get too caught up in the "volume for given audience thing" as too many people have the wrong impressions of this, the EV subs have a fairly decent output rating (doubling the subs to 4 per side, is only going to yield 3db extra level).  Are QSC and the JBL's the only viable alternatives, how do they compare sound wise?
