"Any level to Any level" DI
« on: November 10, 2006, 11:10:43 AM »

Hi all,
I'm looking for an interface device for comuter recording of audio. The scenario is:

Line or Mic level out of mixer into a desktop PC's soundcard. The input on the desktop PC is either a mic or a line in.

I'm looking for some type of "swiss army" DI that will allow me to go from both mic or line level out of the mixer to mic or a line level at the computers 3.5mm input.

Thanks in advance.

Why not just buy a proper audio interface for the computer?

You're making this too complicated, John. Set your computer's input to line level. Connect it to your mixer. Have the mixer handle all the interfacing, use DIs as needed.

Either that or, as Jake suggests, buy any audio interface.

Bennett,
I need to be able to connect "anything" to "anything" and be transformer isolated and/or combined for stereo. The device has to work with just about every mixer output level/impedance and every computer input level/impedance. The application uses different mixers and different computers everytime. I'm doing work for a company that records breakout rooms in the corporate market.

I guess I don't totally understand the application.  Why not carry a laptop so you have the same machine in all places?

Ken's suggestion of the USB adapter is the right one. How old are the computers you're using that they can't use USB1? Many computers don't even have an analog input, so there will never be a DI solution for them. The solution that will work with the greatest number of computers is going to be USB. It will also be fine with every console. It will also be cheaper than a decent mono DI.

Even better yet would be to scrap the usb or analog input entirely and get dedicated digital recorders.

These range from the affordable Marantz PMD660 to a (more professional) PMD670 with a wireless lapel as an input or the snazy Sony PCM-D1 if you want something really special.

any of these units will absolutely slay direct to pc-input recording (and rival external usb audio+external mic) with the bonus of being hands-off.

Set them up and press record - nothing to worry about.

Mac,
I'm working with a very proprietary software that rules out a USB interface.

Karl,
I have a very special application and a Windows based machine has got to be the recording device.
