Which subwoofer would work best?
« on: August 23, 2005, 07:35:19 AM »

I have a P.A. system consisting of JBL SR 4733A Series II with 2 15" woofers and a horn.  I also have the matching 18" subwoofer that goes with it for each side.  I use a Crown 3600 to drive the mains and a Crown K2 2500 watt to drive the two subs in addition to two Eminence 18" in ported boxes.  The problem is I am way under the subwoofer output I need.  I DJ and also provide P.A. for bands.  I need enough bass output that you can feel it even on an outdoor event but stay as compact as possible.  I am not on an unlimited budget as are most of us.  I possibly have a chance to purchase 4 SR series JBL double 18" subs from a local band who may be upgrading their whole system.  They are said to put out about 136 spl at 1 meter according to JBL.

I also have looked at EAW LA 400 which are a little lighter, and smaller, but are said to put out 140 spl at 1 meter.  I would have to buy the EAW new and would only be able to buy two at first.  Would I be better off with the JBLs or the EAWs?  I would use the Crown 3600 to drive which ever I bought.

Those criteria point toward multiple horn loaded subs, and a crossover with appropriate delay capabilities for your top boxes.  Add these horns to your list of candidates:

I'm not going to recommend a sub purchase but I will say that runnning four sub boxes of two different types is a bass-killer. Too often the two types interfere with each other in weird ways.

Beyond that: sub power is increased when subs are positioned against large, hard surfaces (such as the ground) that add to the apparent power. Can you back them up to a wall? A wall would give you two hard surfaces which is better than one. Grouping your subs together will be louder and deeper than separating them into Left and Right stacks.

I won't run the other subs with horn subs.  I do have an oppurtunity to buy four SR series double 18" subs that a local band is going to be selling.  I can probably afford all four of them.  They are suppose to put out 136 spl per box.  I have also considered EAW LA 400 because they are smaller and lighter but are rated at 140 spl.  I would have to buy the EAWs new and could only afford two of them.  My question is would I be better off getting the four front loaded JBLs or two horn loaded EAWs until I could afford two more at a later date.
