Affordable HD Cameras for IMAG
« on: July 01, 2011, 02:08:35 PM »

Has anyone had experience using some more affordable (below $20k) HD cameras for use as IMAG cameras at live events?  We currently own a 4-camera standard-definition Sony Triax system with broadcast cameras, but not only are they getting up in age, we want to start going to HD.  New broadcast HD cameras go for around $40-60k, not including CCU's, lenses, studio kits, etc... and we don't do enough camera work to justify a purchase that large.

We already have some Sony PMW-EX3's, but finding a telephoto lens for it has been an interesting search.  There's also a CCU add-on available for the camera, but looking to see what other options we might have.

Any suggestions out there?
Thanks!

It's not quite under $20k but check out the Hitachi Z5000's. They are 2/3" for under $30k for camera and fiber back, fiber, basic CCU, basic RCB/RCU/paint box and 20x Fuji lens.

There is also the Panasonic HPX370 and 500, I've also heard something about a Sony just a bit north of the Z5000, more like $50k/chain, I don't remember the model #.

We've had good luck with the Canon XLH1 for basic event Imag use. You dont get all the feature of having a CCU, but it takes up a small footprint, looks good with decent stage lighting, has HDSDI output. I think they go for about 10k.

Maybe rent if you need something better but cant justify the purchase.

Have you ever put a telephoto lens on it?
