Avid / Digidesign Venue..
« on: May 11, 2011, 05:52:58 PM »

Hello..

Got a problem. I'm a audio vendor who has a client that is a rather large church. They are wanting to rehab their current mobile recording vehicle, while outfit a new one. Here is the issue..

First off, their TD wants to go with a Avid Venue system. The older control surface. On top of that he has told the church's CFO that you can take the old surface and put a sidecar on both sides to give you a grand total of 40 input faders..

Second off, he says someone from Avid has leaked to him that in version 3 of the software, it will be split and offer a "broadcast" version which will have runtime automation.

I have tried to contact someone from Avid concerning this. As I am not wanting to give up a large sell of two consoles, it my past of selling the venue, we've never seen an older surface with two sidecars on it.

The bigger problem is selling these items to them, and having them come back saying that it's not what they wanted...

The D-Show surface supports up to 3 side cars for a total of 56 input faders.

I have no idea what changes lurk in V3 of the software.  My Digital Crystal Ball (with new rooftop antenna) doesn't get the Avid channel. :(

+1 to what Tim said and I even have the new 3d crystal ball. In my experience you can get info about future avid releases if you ask the right questions. However, avid is v          E          R        Y slow at releasing new products. New software could be three weeks or three years away. Sell them the product on what it does not what is speculative in future upgrades. Make sure they know that there are no guarantees with future releases.

Hi Corbin,

I sent you a PM but I'll reply here too.

I saw your post regarding the Avid desk configs. Yes, it's possible have a 40-fader D-Show surface. This would be done by adding a second 16-fader sidecar to the base system, which already includes a 16-fader sidecar plus 8-fader main unit.

Regarding upcoming features: What I suggest here is to make sure the right folks at the church are talking to the right folks at Avid - specifically, our regional sales and application specialists. The last thing any of us wants is  a misinterpretation or perceived false promise.

If you send me your contact info and where you're located I can connect you directly to the right folks, so there's no confusion.

You say "the older control surface" as if that's somehow a bad thing.  You could also call it "the full-size control surface."  Most digital console manufacturers have started with their top-end "flagship" surfaces, and Avid/Digidesign was no exception.  The "older" surface is still their flagship surface, as far as I know - unless I'm missing something and there was an earlier "legacy" surface I'm not aware of.  As far as I know, the surface they now call the D-Show surface is the *only* model that accepts sidecars, and it's always been able to accept up to 3 of them.

Outside of the issue of the D Show, control surface vs the profile surface, whilst it may be true that many engineers may have a preference for the profile, most of this is based on footprint, the D Show is still the flagship model and as has been pointed out in this thread, accepts up to 3 additional sidecars (albeit with the issue of taking up a fair bit of room).

As to the issue of future releases, in my experience Avid (and formerly Digidesign), tend to remain very "tight lipped" about future developments, right up until release.  Often they will tak about things that have been discussed and requested, but they are obviously very strict about discussing developments.  A recent example was the discussion about possible Madi implementation. Even having discussed possible options in a Venue Webinar, they still wouldn't say that it was in development and it only became confirmed a few weeks later with the official release.  Obviously grabbing a share of the lucrative Broadcast market would probably appeal to Avid, however, Venue might be seen as getting to close to other products such as Icon so I would wait for an official confirmation or a release date before making such an important investment.  Obviously YMMV!  :D
