What's your favorite managed mini-switch for Dante?
« on: March 17, 2024, 11:59:08 PM »

I have an idea forming in my head that could make use of a mini (5 port or so) switch that is good for Dante, but also must be able to be VLAN'd.

What are you guys using out there?

Netgear M4250 and Cisco CBS-350 are what we see/use the most.  Some Netgear GS series if it's really basic and inexpensive.  Not Ubiquiti, but I've heard they aren't as bad as in the past from a couple people who like them.

I have a pair of Netgear GS108PE v3 switches in my recording rack. And Another GS108T v2 as an extra throw around switch.

Rational is using the GS108T v2 switches for Smaart class signal routing.

D-Link DGS-1100-05V2 switches (and 08, if you need 8 ports) work very well and are really inexpensive (40 Euro in my part of the world).

Cheers
Carlo.

The FS S3100 switch is brilliant, POE and full 802.1q vlan support

The Cisco WS-C3560CG-8PC is also an 8 port Gigabit standards compliant switch that offers full IOS (Cisco operating system) with Layer 3 features.  There is no difference of the capabilities of this switch and a $10,000 enterprise switch.  It's IOS support makes it very powerful.  A bit pricey ($400) but worth every penny.  I just picked up one on eBay for $135 so with a little bit of shopping this can be had for a very decent price and it's a 8 port gigabit L3 switch.

We have GS108T switches in all of our amp racks for Dante and have the same rationale for using them. We also have GS308T, not to be confused with the gs308(no suffix)/ the non-suffix version is unmanaged.

The MicroTik switches punch WAY above their weight [literally since they weigh like 5 ounces]. I've used this one with good results, including VLan across the internet.

We've had excellent luck with the D-Link DGS1210 series switches, in various sizes. We've installed many of them running everything from Dante, Qsys/QLAN, various video stuff, etc. We've never had to touch them after the initial configuration.

I happen to have a GS108 V3 sitting here. I didn't know it was a managed switch. Guess I'll start with that and see if my experiment works!

Thanks all.

As boburtz pointed out (and I don't know how he got away here without the username Bob Urtz), it's the GS108T that's the managed version.  The GS108 is unmanaged.
