Replacing TTI PSA
« on: October 17, 2023, 02:56:04 PM »

Hi All,

I'm replacing my old and no longer functioning TTI PSA first gen. I was thinking of just getting a new TTI PSA3605. But I came across a OWON HSA1016-TG this weekend. Has anyone used the OWON? I just wondered how the 2 compared and if there was anything else thats similar money.

cheers

I'm finding my Siglent SVA1015x great bang-for-the-buck. Portable, but not handheld...

I almost got 1 of those, but the IEC cord ruled it out. Nice unit though if running on AC is good, an cheaper than a TTi. Also seem a little better built than the Rigol. At the time I was thinking of using the SA on festivals and the need move from stage to stage seemed important. Not so sure anyore.

You will find many small, nearly portable bench models in that price range ($1500-3500)

RF Venue just announced their newest portable Spectrum Analyzer in around $1500??

Compared to the TTi, the OWEN has many features that the PSA doesn't have, but at a larger footprint.

I personally find the TTi very usable, but a little clunky with screen presses and sub menus

You can also find used Rhode & Schwarz FSH and newer units (I think they've phased out the FSH platform with all the DTV usage) as well in the upper end of that range (love mine, even if the the battery is failing ... I've built a DeWalt battery sled to power it when I need to be mobile), speaking of which, the OWEN has a user replaceable LiOn battery, I haven't seen that in a real unit before.

Let us know what you end up with!

I haven't checked out the Owon, but I will say that I've had excellent service from TTI when I've needed parts and service for my PSA3605(s). You're in the UK, yes? Having more-or-less local service is a big plus in my book.

We have a couple of HSA1016 since 2021. It has been used quite a lot and we are satisfied.
We regularly use the tracking generator to test cables.
It is fast enough for spectrum analysis. Easy to dial in freqs and recently effortless to import scans to Soundbase.

It has some advanced measurement tools but we hardly ever use them as we have a bench Siglent VNA.
The demod functions are rubbish.

On the down size it is not easy for fox hunting as it is bulky. The Ultra is way more elegant for such purpose.

The Palm-based unit?

Yes that’s the one.

I was only looking at it as well as the TTI because the tracking generated would be useful.

My interactions with TTI have been great. I agree having them close by doesn’t hurt.

Thanks for the help everyone.

Hi Alex, one more thing...I would recommend the PSA3605 or equivalent in that series. I found the base models to be a bit feature light. And, when my 3605 got left on a plane last year, a list member generously lent me his original TTI (like your Palm based one) and I found it a lot closer feature-wise to the 3605 than the1302/2702.
