CFP Championship game monitor rig
« on: January 14, 2020, 10:21:22 AM »

For the national anthem, the small riser had a pair of JBL boxes for monitors.  Reasons for this over wireless IEM for such a limited performance.
RF issues in a dome? Possibly related to the coms used by the teams, presidential security, latency, etc?

I'm in South Africa so have no reference for what was setup but would think it is just much easier to throw track and a mic into two wedges then having to set an IEM mix for someone, specifically if you don't know who is going to be doing the singing?

Is was a solo female singing a cappella.  Pretty sure the provider had all the info.  Stage size (iirc 6x8, maybe 8x12) and a single mic on a stand.  On the 50 at the numbers, so speaker cable probably ran 90-100 ft.

I didn't work on the show, but there's no reason I know of that they couldn't have used IEMs (I would guess that there were a lot of other people on that field at the time wearing either IEMs or IFBs). I can think of a few reasons why wedges might have been the better option, though:
  • Wired is always more reliable than wireless
  • ...as evidenced by the wired backup mic sitting on the riser between the wedges (so they were going to run a cable out there anyway)
  • Major broadcast football games can have over 150 channels of UHF RF to coordinate, so cutting one is always a good thing
  • Wedges typically can get to "good enough" a lot faster than IEMs (especially for an unaccompanied soloist), so soundcheck can be a short as possible

Some people don't like IEM's and are perfectly happy with wedges.

On a ball field, you won't be dealing with 'stage' volume or problematic feedback.

If the artist doesn't want to wear IEMs then they get wedges.
