Looking for a good replacement supercardioid vocal mic
« on: November 08, 2019, 10:20:02 AM »

My arsenal of EV ND767 vocal mics have done me well. However, after 18 years they are starting to show their age. Time for replacement. I'm on the fence between the EV ND86, CAD D90, Sennheiser 845, SE V7, Lewitt MTP 840DM, AKG D5 or - ? Trying to keep the price around $100. I prefer supercardioid mics - better gain before feedback. Suggestions/recommendations?

My $0.02, spend a little more and get the Sennheiser e945.  Great mic and superb value.

The nd 767, on the surface is was a good mic, but I find i tired of it very quickly, great gbf though.  I still think the usual suspects though I’ve heard good things about the SE V7 and it’s on my list to check out!  The Audix om7 is popular, but above your price threshold and for me I still prefer 58’s and Betas.

I found E945's on sale one day about a year ago for $99 on Reverb. Bought one. I should have bought more.

The 945 over the 845 is definitely worth it.
Noticeably smoother response.
My personal go-to mic.

Lewitt MTP 550 DM is hard to beat in the  ~100$ group.  It's cardioid, but gbf and stage rejection is very good ...has very transparent sound with smooth off axis.

Audio Technica AE6100, Sennheiser 945, Audix OM6 and OM7.
All are in my mic kit.

Those will all be pushing your budget though.

The Lewett and SE are solid choices I'd say. If you're looking for a surprising bargain try a Samson Q8.
