If you have some decent pencil style condensers you can use them for conference work. Not as discreet as gooseneck but perfectly usable. I have 8+6 matching condensers that I can deploy for this if the customer is fine with how it looks and feels.
Regular dynamic vocal mics is not the way to go IMHO.

We ended up with 16" gooseneck condenser mics for panel discussions and similar talking head/corporate things.  SM58s didn't make the grade.

I'd buy mics based on what make you money.  There are plenty of cheap ass mics that you can use for thrash or punk, but virtually none of them are usable for panel discussions as I know them.

I agree that condenser gooseneck mics would be the BEST choice for panel discussions, but getting a large number of them would be a bit pricey - return on investment might take awhile. Any recommendation on 16" gooseneck mics that don't break the bank?

If your company profit comes from puking punters skip the conferences entirely rather than do the badly.  You can put any vocal dynamic mic on a singer but it doesn't work the other way around.  Spend your capital where the profits are.

Agreed!  Two totally different markets, two totally different gear needs.

But even for the crap music stuff, the SM58 is hard to beat.  It's essentially nearly indestructible.  Yeah, it's a $100 mic vs a $50 mic, but when the $50 mic breaks once and you've got to replace it, you're even!

I've built an inventory of 58's over the years vs buying cheapies.  On the lower profile gigs, I'll send out the used mics. On corporate stuff, I'll use the new ones.

Now for a panel discussion type event, the gooseneck mic looks FAR more professional than a standard mic on a stand.  Is the client willing to pay the difference for the more professional look?

I like to tell people that a SM58 only costs $5 a year.

Just curious.  How do you keep the noise of people constantly bending the gooseneck mics out?

You can get pretty good sounding cheap mics (I like the GLS from Orange County Speaker) but their isolation isn't very good for hand held, or table top with people moving papers and things around on them either.  They're Beta clones and probably too good for punkers though.

FleaBay search for desktop conference microphones. Plenty of sub $50 results that could serve well.
Interesting how`punk' conjures piss and puke for some. Sounds fun. Not.
