Seeking Internship or Other Learning Opportunity
« on: August 18, 2016, 12:11:05 AM »

Moderators, I apologize if I have posted this in the incorrect forum. Please move it if needed.

I want to learn more about live sound reinforcement. My goal is to be able to use my current SRX800 rig to it's maximum and possibly use it for live sound reinforcement for smaller band and corporate events. Currently I only use it for DJ gigs and I know it has more to give even with that.

What I would like is to work for a company in the St. Louis area that does corporate and/or small band gigs.

I feel I know enough to be dangerous but am lacking detailed knowledge. I understand frequency response, causes of feedback, comb filtering, sub coupling, gain structure, basic audio wiring, audio delay, basic RF, basic power distribution, basic networking including WiFi and manual IP assigning, and am well versed in DMX. I also understand the basics of video including switching and distribution of multiple streams of video over SDI to multiple monitors.

I am a quick study and do best when learning hands-on. You will find I catch on quickly and am thirsty for knowledge and skills.

I do have experience with talking head and panel discussion style corporate/political events with very high profile speakers. I have also been in charge of A/V at large trade shows for a 7,000 sq./ft. booth doing live demos every 15 minutes over 4 days.

If you are interested in taking me in as an intern or other entry-level position please PM me.

Thanks!

Come to Cleveland if 90% of what you say you can do is true we will out you to work.  3 or 4 gigs as second chair and you would be out working.  Don't ever work for free.  Also don't talk about your gear they will think you are there to take their customers or steal inventory.

Create a nice CV and go around to the local companies and see if they are hiring.

If I wasn't stuck in STL I would happily move to Cleveland. Family and DJ business will keep me here for a few more years, at least.

I contacted two A/V rental houses, one that I use occasionally, and they both told me I was over-qualified for their entry-level tech positions.

Sure sounds like it to me.  I hope the right opportunity presents itself for you to advance your carrier.  Best wishes to you.

So go after their not-entry-level positions. It sounds like you're ready for that. In any case, I firmly believe that getting in a bit over your head is a very good way to learn and develop confidence in your skills. Just go for it!

Yep. Don't go after entry level. What you do is make nice with people in their events department *that make the gig staffing decisions* = let them know not only what you have gear-wise, but also what your skill set is. Then, they know you're another name in their rolodex for shows more fit to your skill set (and expectations for pay!).

There's a couple local companies here that I do that occasional free lance work for-- I make what I would normally get for my company's own shows, and sometimes there's gear rental involved as well. Both of these I didn't just hand some front desk flunky my resumé; but rather built a relationship with their event techs that book and fill their shows- they know what I can do, and they understand I won't be minimum wage!

"Fake it Til you make it"

It's more an ideology, if you are a director, act like a VP.  If you are a tech, try and be an engineer.

I had an employee once that showed me some work he did on the side, it was amazing, far beyond the quality he did at my shop.  I asked him why and he said, Pay me more and I would.  I fired him on the spot.

Work better and people will pay you more.

Real successful people can do something most can't (field doesn't matter), they are at the top of their game.  They deliver value in every interaction.

Really really successful people can do this and actually still be humble and kind.  This one took me over 4 decades to figure out.

I continually go "in over my head" to learn. One example is tomorrow. I have never setup delay speakers, let alone with a wireless audio link. That's what I'm doing, see this thread: http://forums.prosoundweb.com/index.php/topic,160328.0.html

I have learned a lot form this forum and am grateful for it!

One thing I can't learn by reading is how to setup and run a board for a band. That's what I would really like to learn.

I think I would make a great PA tech for setup and teardown and learn how to be a BE along the way.

Josh,

Even if you started working for a production company today, it'd probably be 1-3 years before you get to touch a console at a major event. And even that would be "watch this while I use the john. DON'T TOUCH A THING!"

You'll find that getting into the live sound event industry is going to involve a lot of "paying your dues" before you get to do the fun, glamorous stuff.

That's the trick. You can be amazing, know you are pretty damn good and still be kind and accept that there is always room to grow.

Josh, if you want to hang around one of our gigs and help load in and tear down, and maybe get a little board time in, we will be in Springfield IL on November 8 at the Crowne Plaza for a weeknight corporate event. About a 1 1/2 hour trip from where you are at. PM me if interested, we can use some paid help that day.
