Hello,

So I'm trying to use a 4K camera to utilize the potential of the sensor (AG-DVX200) but want to be able to downscale it into 1080p because that has to be my final output (due to file size reasons and web streaming).

My signal chain is AG-DVX200 --> Blackmagic 4K 1 M/E Switcher --> External Recorder in 1080p Prores 4:2:2.

The Switcher doesn't downscale, so if I added a scaler in between the Switcher & External Recorder to downscale the 4K resolution to 1080p, will it record the detail of 4K?

Reason I ask is because you can definitely notice downscaled 4K videos have greater detail than videos shot in 1080p and outputted to 1080p.

My goal is to get as much detail and quality out of a 1080p as possible.

Any thoughts?

Are you sure the switcher doesn't down scale? I know some of the Blackmagic switchers have a down scaled output.

The Blackmagic has one aux that allows downconverted program output. You shouldn't need an external scaler.

As to your assertion that you can see a difference in the 4K output of your camera downverted to 1080p vs the 1080p output. What differences? Dynamic range? Your camera uses different codecs for recording 1080p and 4K, most likely you are seeing the differences there. Shooting in 4K mode, take the 1080p SDI output and compare that to the 4K downconverted.

I would suspect that they will be much closer in output.

Thanks I'll definitely try that. I didn't know I could select a 1080p output from the SDI while shooting 4K mode. I thought the shooting mode locked the SDI to it's shooting mode function (4K Sensor = 4K SDI output).

That's what you're implying, correct?

Reading the spec, the SDI output is 3G/1.5G compatible, so it tops out at 1080p.
