Question about going digital
« on: May 16, 2016, 06:32:44 PM »

Right now we have a mackie cfx20 mixer with an analog snake that is going to one power amp for JBL FOH and another amp going to JBL monitors. We are looking at getting the behringer x32 digital mixer with the S32 digital snake. We are wanting to keep our power amps and speakers for right now. Will the digital board and snake be compatable with our power amp and speakers without any additional analog to digital converters on our musical instruments? And will the digital mixer improve our sound over the analog one?

They'll be compatible, but whether they'll be better or worse will depend on how your room is currently wired (where mic inputs and console outputs show up in the room) and how much of your current cable infrastructure you want to keep.

If you have a snake that goes between your console and the stage area that you use for all your mics the digital snake may be a good replacement. If you have mic inputs spread around the stage area and returns to the amps in another location, it may be a step backward.

If the new console allows you to mix better your sound may improve, if it makes it more difficult not so much.

There is much more to answering that question than "is this product better than the system we have now?"

We are running new instrument and mic inputs on the walls on the back of the stage. What would be the best way to run that to our digital snake that will be in a room behind the stage. We was thinking about xlr wall plates. Our mixer will be in the back of the church in a sound booth

If you are running new input panels around the stage just run them to the remote stagebox wherever it's located.

By remote stagebox do you mean the S32?

Yeah. The S32 is the stagebox, with 32 analog inputs and 16 analog outputs. Remember that the actual snake cable isn't included in that package.

Matthew,
My church went thru a similar upgrade to yours; we went from a Mackie VLZ1604 to the X32 & S16 snake.

You mentioned mics and XLR inputs, I assume these are wired mics? Any possibility these will upgrade into wireless mics?
I say this as perhaps the S16 would be sufficient for you and save you $600.

Another note, unless things are really dynamic during your church session or event, the X32 compact (not producer) is practically as powerful as the full X32 and saves $500 and desk space. You'll find the remote ipad/tablet app very convenient such that you don't have to be at the desk at all times.

Those are great points that I'll bring up to the other guys, did y'all notice a big upgrade in the sound quality?
