Seeking bass guitar rig for larger stage, backline duty
« on: June 21, 2014, 08:44:35 AM »

Help me with decision making. I wish to purchase a new bass amp rig to be shared by multiple bands during music festivals. It will most often be used on a certain outdoor stage that is 30 feet X 60 feet, high ceiling, and no side walls. It will be DI'ed into the PA, but I cannot provide side-fills for the stage. Thus, I need something that is big and loud enough to be heard across stage. The less knobs the better, because I don't want first-time users fiddling away during festival changeovers. Budget is flexible, perhaps in the neighborhood of $2000 US. Any suggestions?

I hear a lot of good things about the Mark Bass amplifiers over this side of the Atlantic.

The Mark Bass stuff is nice, especially when it comes time to move it.

An SVT 7 Pro and an SVT810E would make a good, loud back line rig as well.

If you're not having to meet riders, then a Markbass LMT800 on an SVT810E is a good reliable combination.

If you have to worry about riders, then no one rig will do it. However, the above rig is my most popular for outdoor gigs. 90% of the time I've had no problem substituting the Markbass head for whatever amp the player wants. The Markbass is well known and has a good reputation among players.

The SVT810E is the most generic of bass cabinets. I doubt anyone on your stage would have a problem with it.

+1

A GK1001rb is also a super reliable head that few would gawk at. Pair it with a GK Neo cab or 2 and it's super light too.

Ampeg is the universal Backline standard though, so might be the best $ spent...

There are few bass amplifiers that can really fill the bill for just plain full out volume. Find an SVT, MESA, or now a Fender Super Bassman will do the job. Any of these will meet a rider although the SVT is the only amp on the list that will never be questioned.

As a bass player I love my old Mesa 400+.
BUT
As a provider I only carry the Ampeg SVT Classic and Ampeg SVT-810E. It's really the only guaranteed rider filler, like it or not.

the new bass amps with the Acoustic name sound great and are loud. 800 watts of transistor power. guitar center owns the name now. less expensive than ampeg svt. also look for used rigs on craigs list. an 8-10 , 4-12 , or 4-15 would be the minimum speaker cabinet i would go with. i do not have any bass giutar in my drum monitors. i never have a problem hearing an old 8-10 ampeg svt rig and my drums are very loud and i wear earplugs.

I seen others that are acceptable: SWR, Gallien-Krueger, Eden. I'm an Ampeg guy. Another vote for the  Ampeg SVT Pro 7, $800, powerful, not too many knobs. http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/SVT7Pro/

We offered SVT Classic with two 410 or one 810 bottom
Now we are seeing lots of Aguilar rigs on riders. They are endorsing artists like crazy so now that seems to be a must have as well if you are looking to meet riders.
Thats what I am seeing in this market anyway.
