Terminate/shield unused monitor fan on split snake?
« on: November 01, 2013, 12:29:17 PM »

Is it necessary? Will it cause problems having the monitor fan on a split snake disconnected?

Is there a stopgap solution to this, like a mesh bag, etc.?

Thanks in advance,

Never say never. You may want to use that split again someday. Can you just roll it up out of they way?

I can, and did. I'm just concerned that those open ends might have the potential to cause noise, pick up RF, etc.

Is this a passive split or is it transformer isolated?  If isolated, there will be none of those issues.  If passive, I doubt there will be any issues, either (although it is theoretically possible).  I've never had any issues in well over 30 years.

Thanks in advance,
Any kind of termination will load down your sources, and will not help with noise rejection at audio frequencies.  If you're having noise problems, you've either got something that is damaged, or with a noise immunity problem.

I do suggest you attach some kind of pigbag on the loose XLRs. Murphy's Law Backstage Edition informs us that someday, at the worst possible moment, something conductive will bridge a couple of pins and make an unexpected gawdawful noise.

Just saying...

and of course it'll be on lines that have phantom applied.
