Suggestions for a dual 15/18 upper end MI level subwoofer please
« on: February 16, 2013, 05:15:44 PM »

Okay here are my requirements:

1. a conventional vented dual 15 or 18 to sit under a high end 15 + horn. The size matters -meaning i want the sub standing up tall to bring a typical trap box to head levelish. Most 'standard' dual 18's are the appropriate height.

2. Want -3db to be about 40hzish or lower. (hit and slap are more important than the drop)

3. Do not want a high powered box. Thinking like 1000watts/1200watts a side amp power.

4. Price matters.. would love to find a magic box for under 1000$ ea

5. Want the best SPL for the buck.. perhaps a used EV 180b loaded box.. not sure how some other boxes like carvin or community hold up (i imagine they are probably among the better choices in this case)

6. I love danley boxes.. but the tapped horn is out of budget / doesn't really meet the size requirements. (ivan :) )

well since i said something like a used EV would be okay...

With the yammy subs beeing around 400$ there are certainly some models that cost a bit more with better performance. I have zero experience with these banjo center type subs for the most part. (Ev Tour X, Community, carver, and many more make models in this price range)

On the used market Peavey DTH218b seems to be available some of the time.

If you stretch your budget a little, the Yorkville LS1004 should give satisfaction.

Forget EV the 180b boxes are -3db at 50hz, old JBL SR series perhaps or Yorkville SW1000s.

Pushing the top end of your budget, take a look at the Peavey QW218. Used would fall easily in your budget.

The old SR-X series would be a good buy on a budget.

SR series double 15 sub if he can find them.   A friend has an SR Series II PA (just before SR-X), with some double 15s as well as double 18s.  I prefer the 15s.

Jeff - check with your VUE Audiotechnik rep about the A series double 15.  I think you will be surprised how affordable it is.

I have a plx3602 laying around that would be best to use on these.. with the qw218 I'm concerned that is just not close to enough power and a lower power handling speaker would be better.. (can't find sens #'s posted in their spec sheets)

1200 watts @ 4ohm  a side is not a ton of power for bass... especially on a 3200watt@4ohm program sub.
