I'm thinking about taking on a side project that would see me playing in a "power trio" type act.
I would like to automate or sync the lighting to the backing tracks. Right now with another band I sequence the tracks and render them down to high bitrate MP3, load up an ipod and call it a day. L to FOH, R to drummer for click. I just set a static scence, or run a slow chase.
I have ISC Bluelite X1 mini & software and a pile of colorstrips and LED Pars. What am I going to have to do to automate a lightshow?  Guess I'll have to use something other than an ipod.

Many consoles support MIDI show control.  If your tracks are MIDI based, that might be a place to start.

The easiest way to do what you want is to play back your backing/click tracks through something like QLab or Show Cue System and then use that same software to send MIDI show control commands to Bluelight to trigger light cues. Just keep in mind that this is going to require an additional computer to run the software, a purchase of the necessary software which will cost anywhere from a few to several hundred dollars, and a MIDI interface between the two.

load audio right into the console and play it back with the lighting cues

softwares free and a usb/dmx interface w/ dongle might run you a thousand bucks, depending on how big a dongle you need

audio out of laptop -> foh, done
