power down but with powered speakers
« on: July 20, 2010, 03:23:34 PM »

OK so I’m helping with the install of this venue that I normally rent sound to.  I use 2 EV ZXA5 and 2 JBL VRX918SP for the Fri & Sat night events because its more of a dance crowd but on Wed & Thurs its just a lounge crowd so I just use the 2 ZXA5.  The venue is looking at getting 2 EV SXA250 and have them mounted to the wall and on Fri & Sat I’ll bring my VRX in for the sub duty.  Here is my issue.

With the speakers being powered I need to figure out a way to turn them off at the end of the night.  Currently there is no power near either speaker so they are having an electrician come in to install a 20 amp circuit just for the tops and the 2 led lights that will be installed later on.  Any ideas on how I can power down the tops at the end of the night without having to get a ladder and do it?  Also ideally I would like for them to shut off with a 5 second delay of each other if possible.  Any help would be great as they want to have everything installed by this weekend since I have gigs already booked so I won’t be able to even be there.

It won't give you the five second delay, not sure why you want that but have them put in a light switch with some sort of cover over it if you are concerned about bumping the switch.  Maybe something like what you see over a thermostat.

That's what I was thinking too.  Only reason for the delay is I didn't think it would be a good idea to just turn the power off all at once since the speakers would still be turned up.  I guess it wouldn't be such a bad idea though.

Just make sure to turn off the speakers before the mixer and you should be fine.

Hopefully you mean that the Electrician is installing the LED lights and a 20 Amp circuit for the powered speakers rather than his installing a 20 Amp circuit that will serve both the powered speakers and the lights.

Just curious, but how do they plan to mount the SxA250 speakers on the wall?

both the lights and the sound will be on the same circuit because it is only 2 LED
lights.  They plan on using just 2 color stripes just to add some wash to the dance
area.

They are mounting the speakers using some wall mount rated at 100 lbs.  I'll have
to find out the exact mount when I see them next time I'm up there.  Not sure why
they are mounting the speakers to the wall instead of flying them but oh well I'm
just in charge of recommending the speakers.  I told suggested to just hire me to
keep doing the sound since they liked the sound of my system but oh well.

Why don't you just flip the circuit breaker off. Like Dave said make sure that you turn your speakers off before your mixer.

The circuit breaker itself is no where near where everything else
will be installed.  I'm going to have them run a switch that can
be controlled by a key so that the DJ can't turn the system off
but they can still unplug while the speakers are on.  Reason
being, even if the DJ is not playing I may have my laptop running
some music at the end of the night as people leave.  The way my
system is setup is so that at the end of the night I mute the
cd the DJ is on before they unplug their mixer or before they
turn their power off.  I go up there today to see what all they
have done since last week.  The system they had was two PV PR12
tops and a PV PV900 amp.  Cable was all 14ga and the cord from
the amp to the DJ was a 25' RCA.  As you can tell they know
nothing about installing a sound system.

If you want individual control over stages in the sequence to, say mute the speakers while the DJ unpatches, you can install an inline switch that kills the MiniPorts at the speakers, or use something like the PowerLink, which gives you individual switching control over each stage of the power sequence.

For powered speakers, I run either 2-pair shielded wire to each location and use one for signal and one for switching the MP-15, or I use Belden 4-conductor shielded wire and use one pair plus shield for signal and one for switching. Since the switch line is DC, I've never had any issues with noise.

SXa 250's don't have any flypoints. I'm not sure how you would fly these in a safe, stable manner. There are other self-powered speakers in the same price range which can take points or have a U-bracket (QSC and EV both have them).
