Interesting.

Picture is cropped rather than re-sized.

I'd rather see it re-sized, but this is better than nothing!

On Safari 5.0.3, the image is off the page; have to scroll all the way to the right to view it.

Same here. As I said, the picture is cropped, but at least the page width is not modified. So one problem is fixed (page width staying constant) but in a kludgy sort of way.

can now see your picture fine - don't know if it was this software or the Mac OS update this am.

May have been 10.6.6, because 10.5.8 still has the same issue.
