What subs to buy?
« on: August 25, 2011, 08:10:26 am »

Looking at subs in the price range of 1000 each.  I have looked at the qw-218 peaveys and the sp-218 peaveys.  Is there that big of a difference in these cabs?  They both have pro riders subs in them.  I am open to other brands and have heard good things about the yorkville subs.  Would like feedback.  thx

Asking "what subs to buy?" is like walking into a dealership and asking "what truck to buy?"

It depends:

I would take the QW218s over the SP218s hands down.  The entire QW line from Peavey is a very good sounding line of cabinets - unfortunately they still have the Peavey name on them which doesn't win over a lot of people in this industry.

I don't have any experience with the Peavey subs but one of my favorite dual 18" subs is the Yorkville TX9. You can probably grab a pair used for less than a grand each, but after a quick search I didn't find any dealers selling them new so I'm not sure what they go for. They go low and they pound something fierce. I used them in a couple different house gigs for a few years.

The UCSI is also a great sub that fulls under your budget.

Those are my two favorite yorkville subs, the LS808 is a beast as well in terms of sheer output, you can't go wrong with any of those as far as I'm concerned.

Any criteria other than 1000 somethings each (don't know where you are located so US dollars would be just an assumption)?  Anything in terms of size, portability, output, mounting hardware, etc.?  Any limitations on brands available to you or whether used gear is an option?  Do you already have the processing and amps for the subs and if so, what are they?  What are you using these for and what are your mains?

Wow someone agrees with me.

Tracy,
For $1k per box you can build a great double 18

http://www.usspeaker.com/cabinetsoftware-1.htm

http://www.faitalpro.com/products/schede/hps.php?id=201070120

http://www.rcf.it/products/precision-transducers/low-frequency-transducers/l18p400

Get the programing and drivers from us speaker, talk to Al.  Use 1 of these drivers, or use both for comparison.
After I built my double 18 box, and was chosen over eaw 528's yakville 1004's and jbl 4719's, by the owners of those box's I'll never buy a sub again.
Use those drivers I have listed, power them with 2000-3500 watts each box and hold on tight.
Plus you can build them to the size you want.

Heres mine loaded with faital 18xl1500
http://www.usspeaker.com/faital%20pro%2018xl1500-1.htm

I'm running a crest pro 8200 bridged at 4500 watts per box.

As long as rider acceptance, resale value, cross renting, name brand recognition, etc. aren't factors and you have the tools time and skills, then that may be a good option.
