Finally got to put my new Danley amp through its paces....
« on: June 23, 2024, 11:23:26 AM »

So I was finally able  to do a couple of decent sized outdoor shows using my new DNA 20k amp with my Danley PA.
I didn't notice enough difference in the sound for that to be a factor TBH which probably indicates that the Powersoft T602 amps I've been using are not only comparable quality but also that I had the Danley factory settings dialed in well on them. Where I did notice the difference however, was in how much headroom I had.
The PS amps put out 2500w into the 4ohm TH118s and the DNA 20k provides 3000w (using the subs as the  limiting factor in SPL) which shouldn't make enough difference to be noticeable YET it seemed to increase headroom by quite a bit.
This past Friday, I ran an outdoor show I've done a few times where I have used the PS amps so I could compare pretty well .....and with the PS amps, I always had them opened up on the verge of limiting at this show but this time, the metering was indicating I had quite a bit to go if needed (which I didn't actually need).
I had a feeling I was leaving something on the table with the PS amps in regards to volume and this confirms that - the reason I made the investment in the DNA amp.
I also like having an old fashioned on/off switch on the DNA compared to the soft button on the PS amp - just a preference thing.
The controls on the amps are equally easy to access.
The DNA amp is HEAVY - LOL. so takes some getting used to. This thing is a beast!. The PS amps are stupid lightweight and having 2 x 2 channel means I could separate them into  small racks making them even easier to carry. BUT it's not like we have many racks of amps to worry about so this is not an issue.

I sold one PS amp and kept the other so I always have a good quality back up amp. Having the 2 PS amps gave me built in redundancy if one went down at a show so I never carried a spare but now I don't have that luxury and my only other amp is my Crown XLS 2000 I've kept all these years. So bringing a back up amp makes sense.

So now I have the DNA amp to use with the TH118s and the SM80s, I finally feel whole- LOL

Thank you Scott Carneval in Raleigh NC for all your help and support through this!!!

Therefore:  $ + lbs = Headroom

Well written review.  Looking at the aspects you compared tells me this:  It's not really about the amps reading this as I own neither brand nor likely ever will.  What I do see is a very experienced operator, that has seasoned awareness, "Doing what we do" in terms of moving through gear and making changes.

I hope this comes across as a light hearted complimentary compliment.

Congrats!
I don't know about the PS amps, but the on DNA, you can easily limit the input power draw, so you won't trip a breaker.  Handy for those questionable situations.

If you think the DNA amps are heavy, you should have been around when we were toting Crest 8001s and such. They make the DNAs seem like almost feathers.

A quick note on the limiter meters.  Don't be afraid to "light them up" a bit.  They are very sensitive and give a false sense of how much limiting is actually going on (that you can sonically hear).

As I have often said "As long as the limiter leds are off more than then are on-you will be fine" (on the DNA amps).  Above that point is where you can start to hear a bit of pumping.  But that is still FAR better than letting the smoke out of the cabinets.

Pretty much needed a fork lift for those old Crest amps :)

Thanks Ivan. Yes agreed - compared to some of the older heavy duty amps the DNA is a joy.
I bet I had a good amount to go on the DNA but just didn't need it for this show.....looking forward to really opening it up!
