Just pondering...
« on: June 20, 2024, 04:31:34 PM »

In a world full of solutions just looking to solve problems no one has; why has the XLR standard not been updated?  Obviously, because it works.  But think of all the adapters and replacement gear you could buy!  Has no one ever attempted to force a new standard?  Have you heard of anything in the past?  I think I have some weird AKG mics that used a four pin connection to connect to it's own power supply, but it still uses three pin XLR to send audio out of that.  As I said just pondering on a slow Thursday.

It has been updated somewhat over time. The dielectric is no longer rubber (that's what the 'R' in 'XLR' stands for), The strain-relief is much better (Thank You Neutrik), the shell is more fragile (Thank You Neutrik)...

I never had problems with MX series shells but the MXX series are really solid.

Back in the 40s and 50s, engineers designed stuff that was rock solid.

By the 1970's the XLR had become pretty much the standard.  It's pretty rock solid and easy enough to use.

There have been some attempts at different connectors, trying to make them cheaper or smaller, but the potential advantages aren't great enough to create an entire different standard.  While smaller connectors would seem desirable, in reality a smaller connector would be much harder to fix in the field and would likely be less durable.

What's really crazy is the 1/4" connector is still around.  That was created way back in the 1800's when telephone switchboards were getting started.  The good news is construction and materials have resulted in much more reliable connectors, although still problematic compared to the XLR.

Ah yeah, that's an awesome document that I've forgotten about.

A couple of cool things. It's crazy that the standard for pin 2 hot wasn't made official until 1990.  It was always fun trying to determine which standard gear used back before then.  Having polarity reversing plugs was important.  I finally weeded out my reverse wired XLR-1/4" cable probably about 10 years ago now.

The other interesting thing is the AES 14 standard that says equipment outputs should always be the male connector.  Apparently the folks that created the DMX standard didn't get the message as the output is the female connector.

I think the DMX standard kind followed the thought you would not want exposed pins on the output of a dimmer rack Socapex connectors.

Well obviously it needs AI in there somewhere. Sales are down, we need to push another product cycle!!!
