Stencil Ink or Paint for ATA cases
« on: May 03, 2024, 06:25:30 PM »

I have stencils and am going to pick up the rollers and paint to label some ATA cases.

Would you use a flat brayer style roller or a nappy one?

What kind of paint or stencil ink do you recommend ?

Thanks as always

Subscribed.

I picked up a roll of single sided 12" or so wide plastic sheet material to make some stencils with for cases.  Going to cut them out on the laser.  Haven't done it yet.

So, interested in your solution Scott.

Rattlecan of Tremclad White?
not fancy, but has always worked for me.

Thanks Chris but a rattle can has always been a no go for me.  Fuzzy edges from overspray because you can't tack the stencil down well enough to prevent the overspray.

I want to roll the paint on and I thing I want to use a solid roller.

I paid a company to do my stencils.   They used a pen plotter with a knife in it to cut the stencils

I use an acrylic paint (white) designed for fabric.  I use those sponge brushes to paint/blot it over my stencils.  If you are going to use a roller, I would think the lowest nap possible would be the best choice.  The "higher" the nap, the more textured the surface should be for the application.  Flat surfaces, should use minimal nap rollers.

Stencil ink. Neat, dries fast, looks way better than spray and no need to worry about overspray or paint fumes. I have stencilled cases inside venues and the backs of trailers.
very low nap roller, whoever you buy the ink from will have the right roller. Think about it like applying gloss enamel to a smooth surface.

I picked up a very strong enamel ink that one would use with leather, a pallet, brayer and foam brush.  Plan on testing Wednesday.  Will post results.

Scott, did you ask your supplier what they recommend for ink and application?

I too am subscribed to this one.  For a while I’ve gone back and forth between the stencil/ink/paint route versus getting some nice printed metal plates to rivet on the cases.  Though more expensive, I think the plate route looks better and can be easily gaffed over if a client wants cases left in view as “stage props”.  I’ll probably settle on one or the other when ordering my next set of truck-pack cases and go from there…
