There's been some noise here lately. Would it be possible to make all new posters answer one or two simple mandatory questions to keep the spammers from posting?

I'm thinking along the lines of "What do you call the most common connector plug for balanced audio signals (also used for DMX)?" Most people about to post in these forums would know it is XLR, but it is enough of a hassle to google it that most spammers/bots would simply move on to the next forum.

I am a moderator at another popular forum and what we do to screen out spammers is ask them to make a nominal contribution via paypal to the forum.

Just like junk mailers don't believe in paying postage, spammers will not pay even a dollah to spam you. Paypal gives you a valid email address to contact them.

Agreed on John's comment. I also Admin a forum and we ask for a one off £1 paypal payment. As you said, its a tracable email and and hopefully Paypal have done their due dilligence prior to allowing that persons account to be opened. The donations are used to pay upkeep on hosting and software.

Asking for payment MIGHT work, but I'd guarantee you'd turn away far too many legit users.  It's extremely unlikely that I'd ever sign up for a forum that asked for money, unless I already was aware of said forum and the content it would provide.

While a dollar isn't much to ask for, I'd probably just move on to the next forum I found instead.

The forum software we changed to a while back has spam detection capability where it compares email and IP addresses of new sign ups to known spammers. Some of these pukes are pretty prolific making multiple attempts unsuccessfully.
