But we have a lot more tools-and better ones-available to us now.

I remember attending many of "those types" of concerts-and they sounded fine.  VERY rarely did I think about the sound.

From my memory-and my listening position (mostly on the floor in front of the stage-no assigned seating back then), most concerts were just fine-but not all-bad mixes etc for some bands.  Some things haven't changed at all.

here's a picture of the Earls Court setup from '73

Saw and heard this rig in the Rainbow theatre in London in 1972 (following the rehearsals mentioned in the article, Dark Side of The Moon was the first half of the set followed by a medley of oldies in the second set). It was the first system I had heard where I thought the roof of the building was going to cave in during the one of their numbers - Astronomy Domine - and was supported by the quad system comprising 2x15inch Gauss/1xhorn/2xJBL 075 cabs.

I wonder if that was the system they where using when I saw them at Kent State in 1972.  They started the show with "Echos" and later introduced songs from Dark Side of the Moon.  I was such a devout fan that I thought  they were selling out!  Dark Side of the Moon seemed so "commercial"
