Title: DMX Splitter
Post by: John Livings on March 19, 2012, 12:02:30 am
Any suggestions on a DMX Splitter?

Things to look out for?

I looked at this;

http://www.chauvetlighting.com/data-stream-4.html    I just got it, so I have only used it 4 times. works great.  If you had 5 pin to 3 pin I think you could have a total of 8 splits.  I have only used 4 3pin splits.  you can also link units together

I have the Chauvet, too.  So far it's been fine - no frills, but functional.  There's an internal power supply, so no wall wart needed.  My only small complaints are that the case is a little thin, there's no removable IEC cord, and the data LEDs are a little bright.  None of these are dealbreakers, and the box is cheap, so those things are easily overlooked.

As far as I know, only each output block is actually isolated - not each jack, so if you use both the 3-pin and the 5-pin in the same section, they're not really isolated from each other - just a wiring convenience to choose either pin configuration for that leg.

Nothing but good things to say about the Elation Branch4. Have had several in operation for a few years and only one capacitor in one split has gone bad, and easily repaired.

TJ, any of the units that offer 3/5 pin outputs are paired the same way. The Elation unit is similar in that regard.
If you're looking for cheap, there's this one:

Haven't tried one yet, but I might pick one up just to play with at this price.

the 3 and 5 pin outputs on these units are paralleled, so you only get 4 discrete outputs, not 8

plugging into both outputs has the same effect as looping through another fixture in your chain

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Thanks Duane,

Was not looking for "Cheap" however for the price ($52.00) I ordered one. (1X8) (12 V Power Supply not included).

I was also considering one of the Elation splitters (1X4), If the "U.S. Led" unit does not work out I will order one of the Elation units.

Regards,  John
