Title: Live capturing and conversion to .avi files
Post by: Irv Laskoe on August 04, 2010, 04:53:44 pm
I have the need to capture SD video with audio, convert it live and store on a hard drive. This file will then be sent to an ftp site. No time to digitize from tape.
The recording length should be aprox. 30 minutes.
My video source is 640 x 480 30fps either composite or component NTSC. My audio source is 2 channel balanced XLR.

I have access to GV Turbo's. The Turbo's will actually do this even though they weren't built for that purpose alone.

My initial calculations show about 1.5 GB/minute !
That could be quite a large file to upload, and I will have TWO of them to upload (2 camera iso recording).

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I'd see if a lower bitrate video looks good enough for your use.

The Turbo can record in various compression rates.. 4, 12, or 15mb/s as I recall, at least when you record in MPEG. It might not compress AVI.

But yeah, a 30 minute uncompressed AVI is going to be huge. That's why it's not a very widely used format for online distribution.

Try these guys http://www.digital-rapids.com/

We use these at work. Military case, can record 3 or 4 different sizes of files at 1 time. Component, composite, xlr, rca balanced and unbalanced in.

Hope this helps.

P.S These units record in any format of your choice. Pal, ntsc, avi, 480x640..........
