When you say "definitely needs to be upgraded," why is that? What does the current rig not do that you need it to do? I'm not sure what the rest of the system is, but if the amps/processing are long in the tooth, and the drivers are all still in good shape, those boxes would probably come back to life with some newer DSP amps and a good tuning.

It seems like there would be very few situations where more than 4 of anyone's constant curvature boxes would work well unless you need to shoot up to a balcony AND cover a front row that's only a few feet from the stage.

The 4887, like its larger family members, greatly benefited from V5.1 processing available in the ITech HD.  I'd not presume to "tune" it so much as voice it.

Data Bass has been EOL since late 2022, it seems.  It looks like Kyle stopped putting money into the site last winter; only the forum is currently up and there is discussion of it just fading away.
Bummer, I hadn't looked for a while, but found it quite useful.

Currently they fly an old JBL Vertec 4887 rig, six boxes per side, along with 4 VRX18 subs per side.  This covers the area well but it definitely needs to be upgraded.

This is excellent advice. Thank you. These will be used in a high school and will likely sit unused for extended periods of time.

Regardless of advertised self-discharge rate, for NiMH batteries that have been sitting for a while I would always recommend charging them again before their next use.

One additional advantage of the Eneloops is very low self discharge. For those doing shows weekly this may not be a problem; for those of us who work more sporadically, my system of a “Charged bag” and a “Dead bag” works even with gigs months apart. For standard NiMH batteries I would be less comfortable using a battery I last charged 6 months ago.

+1 on the Eneloop Standard (white). For high drain things like digital camera flashes the pros allow the flash to recharge faster; for typical production wireless usage, the extra current capacity of the “pros” isn’t worth it to me.

This is definitely an important consideration (IIRC most NiMH batteries will be pretty flat after 6 months). FWIW, Maha's "Powerex Precharged" do fairly well in this regard as well.

I am the opposite... I have powered tops (RCF TTP4A) and passive subs (CD218 - B&C loaded) with Gruppen FP+ and Clair iO DSP.  We smaarted my set-up and found the 'delay' to be very minimal and not enough to worry.  I run the TT's through the Clair iO and run them on the L1 setting (full range/flat).

I started with a full SRX800 system and quickly found its faults (aka out grew it).  First, I replaced the mains with RCF TTP4A and then 1 TT's could easily out run 2x SRX828SP.  After buying the TT4s, I began saving/budgeting for 4x RCF SUB9006/TT36 subs and at ~$8k each it wasn't cost effective.  Then a local company was selling their subs and I couldn't pass up on the price (when I'm all said and done, I'll have invested less than $10k on 4x subs with proper power).

What are you using for the EDM shows now?

Find some used Touring Subs and Power amps for low-end.

With EDM and 600 people, you won't need much on top end and a pair of DZR315 should be fine.

Sub Suggestion: True Heart Sound has some L'Acoustic SB218 @ $2875/pair; Powersoft K10-DSP @ $2700

I could have sworn there was data the other data.  Well, not today so maybe I was hallucinating.  No amount of filters and view changes would get the table to populate.

Sorry.

I'll look for some mid range shotguns and give them a go.

I know the X32 has automix, but I've never used it nor do I know how well it works.  I'm not aware of it having gpio/vcas but having never needed them.

I'll try putting them above the PA,

You want the mics as close to the sound you want to pick up as possible. Above the PA may be unnecessarily far away.
