Title: Wide images distort screen proportions
Post by: Sean Birdsell on May 24, 2004, 09:55:24 PM
When a post gets an image posted that is wider than the "default" width for the message boxes, the entire thread reverts to the larger (wider) width.  This makes any line of text that doesn't end with a hard-return fail to soft-return within the screen, meaning you need to scroll horizontally to read each message in the thread.

Example: (LAB: hotbox DI problems) http://srforums.prosoundweb.com/index.php/m/4468/160/?SQ=467 6a0baac587b552364a6549302c8fd#msg_4468

Maybe I'm picky, but it's really annoying!

I agree it's annoying, but since we're not dealing with svg (scalable vector graphics) here, but rasterized (bitmapped) images, that's what happens. Tables--regardless of how their dimensions are set--should, by html standards, stretch to accommodate any contiguous wide element placed inside the table. The best solution is for people to use a little common sense when uploading graphics: either scale the images yourself (using Photoshop or some other image editing software) to 800x600 (the current web standard; 95% of monitors used to surf the web today are 800x600 or higher), or link to an offsite image which is larger (assuming you have it available elsewhere online). We can restrict filesize by "weight" (which we do, with a generous 1024Kb), but not by dimension, at least at present.
