Title says it all. I'm used to seeing 12 channel CPCs on stage boxes bit I'm wondering if I can get 24 channels on a CPC or something like it. This is for the output of a playback machine. The connector would be mounted to a rack panel and a snake with XLR tails would connect to it.
Any thoughts?

12 balanced channels on a 37 pin cpc

Cpc no
However
Mass or Veam will have a connector in the74+ pin arena that should do what you want.

Only 37 pins on the cpc shells usually used for 12pair snakes so not enough pins for 24 channels even with a common pin for sheild (some of the old Canare snakes were built that way).
Use two 12pr and it will integrate easily with exisiting 12pr stuff. Easier to get spares when it matches what everybody already owns.

Is there some magic to CPCs? There are lots of multipin connectors in all kinds of sizes out there. My personal favorite is Link's LK series. They are the most rugged connectors I've seen, and with the rubber collar and the roller bearing cam they are easy to use. The pins are very recessed for extra protection.

Aside from the fact that they are awesomely reliable year in and year out? No.

They are cheap and with the right backshell, pretty reliable as well.
AMP has a variety of shell sizes and pin configurations in the CPC series. While the most common in our world by far is the shell size 23 37-pin version, we have a few 16-channel snakes using the 52 pin insert in the same size shell.

Can you do 24 channels with it? I didn't think so.
