Title: Let's see your RACKS! FOH & AMP
Post by: Rich Grisier on April 16, 2010, 04:52:48 PM
I'm about to do some re-racking of equipment and therefore am in the market for some smart ideas.  How you route power, audio and interconnections are of interest.  Please post some pics/links of your rigs!

Thanks for the pointer!  I did search... but a search on Amp Racks, or Racks returns a haystack of results.

FOH and amp. All connections are on the front of the amp rack.  I makes setup a lot faster for me.

Sure they are!  Just because they're not all neat n' tidy or full of the latest amps and processing doesn't mean you can't be proud of them.  I say post some pics and, at the least, you'll get pointers on how to make sure everything is wired, organized, and placed properly.

On that note, I'll post a pics of mine, as soon as I finish the, um, customization. I have a feeling some of you are going to get some flashbacks to the days before you could buy all the neat rack organizers and mounting hardware.  Embarassed

Fine. Pretty basic, I dont have any pics of the rear, but once I finally build new racks with rear rails, I will make a nice patch panel. Crossover is now in my FOH Rack. Nady Rack lights are just from my old setup. Although they are SKB cases, I'm really glad to have them over my old home made wood ones, and I got a killer deal on two 10ru's.

The first thing I would do is put 4 screws in each component, not just 2.

No, thats the 2nd thing I am going to do. The first thing to do is get actual SKB screws (or something that will work). None of the cases came with anything to mount with so I had to do a last minute rigging with some hardware left over from my studio racks.

You are right there.  The faster you can move away from SKB, Gator, and other plastic cases the better.  It may not be cheaper but it will definitely be more reasonable to invest in some better cases.  There are numerous threads here discussing sources for these.

We still have the Crests powering the S-4ish rig.

And a bunch of ITechs in Blackhust/Stage Gear shock racks, most with Schubert RedBox audio and data i/o panels.  Nothing special about any of them.... at least, nothing special in the world of regional or touring production.

That's why these are pr0n threads.  The posts by Derick S on his breakin/out panels, or your posts on building & wiring an IEM rack are very cool, but pics of racks by themselves are just exploitive.  And every time you exploit a rack, god kills a kitten.  Please, think of the kittens!

Have fun, good luck.

Not to pick on Matt or those performers at all, but I noticed an illuminated EXIT sign above the door behind the drum kit.  If someone asked me to setup in such a location, I would refuse to do the gig, and I would lose a customer over it if I had to.  As far as I know it is totally illegal to block such an exit, and even if it seemed safe, any kind of inspector could jump on it.  Am I right to think this way?

Depends.  Usually there are exit minimums, depending on the room capacity and the layout.  If the minimums are met even with a particular exit blocked, you might meet code.  Still not a good idea.

And I don't think the lighted sign is supposed to be on over a blocked exit. The whole point of the sign is for folks to be able to find the way out if the room starts to fill up with smoke or the other lights are out, etc. Pointing folks to a blocked exit is very bad mojo.

There is a Exit about 5' infront of the speaker stack... and a few more around the building.  The double doors leads to a Wrap around deck, which is ajoined by the other doors.

This venue is a place that no one that 15 or so locals hang out at (the band can pack a 500 person room 15 miles away, but can fill this 100 person venue).

Yeah, but the illuminated EXIT sign is still there over an exit that is effectively blocked and obstructed by trip hazards, some of which are owned by you.

It doesn't make that much of a difference between the top Vs bottom for rack plates for me. I built the racks at different times.

All on the back with us. We do lots of outdoor festivals so we can put the front rack door on before we tarp for the night. Feel like the racks are better protected from the elements that way. Also it looks WAY cleaner to have no cables in front of the racks. When the show is done unpatch the back of the racks and roll them out of the way. Gives you more room to wrap up cables.

I agree on ease and cleanliness. Its how I planned to do it when I get around to making patch panels, I just saw a few people with them in front and found it interesting and wondered why

I do a lot of tight stages and the back of the rack is hard to access at a show more often than not so I put my in/out panels on the front of my rack.

I can't remember the last show I was able to see my amps from FOH!

Not saying it's the right way for everyone by any means, just throwing out why someone might do it the other way.

If you find it easier to have them in the front that is cool. I think the key is what works for you. We are on mostly portable stages so access to the back isn't much of an issue.

And I'm not saying you can see the racks from FOH, but you can see them while stand in front of them backstage. I like the clean look with no cable mess and I have even had a client or two comment on the clean look.

I am with Steve, it seems that a lot of gigs we are pushed into a corner  and access for me to the back of a rack, at a lot of gigs, can be difficult,

That is why I opted to make mine all front access, I kept the panels at bottom bottome to try to keep the mess down and be able to hide excess under the rack if possible. It has worked ok so far.

Hey Matt, do you remember which rack you built first? I was wondering if that drove the decision  to move down or up?

I am not picking on you at all, I am just very curious as I have seen both systems.  Mine have always been at the bottom so I can hide cords and such under the bottom amp. The power distro in the racks always ends up so bulky, I try to put it low to minimize cord length out of the case and bends.

Like I said, I leave the backs on as it is one less cover to find and If I use "help" they cant get in the back and plug in wrong Smile

Great comment Lee!!

OK you inspired me to take some pics of a few things.  Here is my club rig/monitor rack for the A system.  It's not pristine - the wires are  a bit unruly - but it's fast and easy.  Let's call her BERTHA like her momma before her.  Her momma had heavy QSC's on the bottom and a Mackie on top but thanks to this forum I have seen the light and moved uptown to see the Wizard.

At least the speakons are on the front even if you do have to dig aound back to plug the mics in.  The lids are "guillotine" style and by far the quickest and easiest solution.  They don't take up much room when you remove them and they are fine for poeple like me who do all my own work and never let gorillas near my junk.

http://i349.photobucket.com/albums/q372/GeneHardage/WIRES/RRrackBackOPEN.jpg

Just grab the handles - tilt it back on the wheels and go.

http://i349.photobucket.com/albums/q372/GeneHardage/WIRES/RRrackBackHANDLES.jpg

Now - onward to another item that comes in handy for people like me who carry several guitars to every gig.

That's a standard Strat case with the guitar rack next to it.

Pull the guillotine cover off and it's ready to erect.  Laughing

http://i349.photobucket.com/albums/q372/GeneHardage/WIRES/GtRackSTEP1.jpg

It's like the one I bought from Viking Cases years ago but I've modified it.  It's now smaller - lighter - sturdier - and a little cheaper too.

It doesn't make that much of a difference between the top Vs bottom for rack plates for me. I built the racks at different times.

So, front or back? Preferences? Discussion?

I put all the panels in the front of the rack as most of the time the rack is pushed into a corner or up against the wall.

One of these, days I'm going to upgrade the 8sp to a 12sp and put some rack fans in the top to suck the air out and i would be able to leave the back door on (plus there is going to be 3 amps per rack).

I see a lot of situations where people keep their driverack / speaker management system close to the stage and amps..
the only input I have is that I keep mine up by the board.
I've always wondered what the effect of having the 100 foot run before the driverack would be as opposed to having it after the drive rack--- other than any line-loss would be subtracted from the output as opposed to from the input..  I wonder what is better?  probably at the stage.  that figures.

Yeah, the back of my board rack is too much of a birds-nest to show on this site.  I'd be embarrassed.
too many 4-channel single spacers in their.. a couple of 2 channel pieces.. a cheap furman.. even with the wire-ties, there are just cables everywhere.  its only an 8 space yet its super heavy without a single amp in it.. or I'm just weak.

Nice Stuff.

I mix on an allen & heath wz3 16 channel.  it doesn't look impressive.
one of my amp racks looks ok with the XTi's in it.. but then, I don't want to post pics because it just announces I use XTi's for subs.
They really worked really well when new but I think the heat from the current is slow-cooking the output circuits and they are getting a little "tamer"..
I WISH I had an ITech.

your gear looks pretty sweet.  I'd hire you.

There is no actual difference between the two in terms of audio. The main reason we keep out DSP in the amp racks is because we have different FOH and Speaker setups so the DSP travels with it's amp/ speaker setup. Plus when we are running a digital FOH we don't need racks out front. Hope that makes sense.

Sometimes even with proper mults and cable management there still isn't much you can do.  Maybe this will make you feel better.  Plus it's something a little out of the ordinary for most of the rock and roll guys to look at.

My FOH Rack.  Power down the left side, audio down the right.  I plan on moving everything down 1 space and putting some lights at the top when I get some cash, but for now I'm using a $10 RadioShack book light..... it gets the job done.

I keep my Rane G4 Gates and Alto compressors in a separate smaller rack that I can travel with when needed.

While certainly capable of "big league" performance I've never thought the M3000 to be terribly cost prohibitive for a lounge rig.  Then again, I don't have to buy the stuff, I just spin the knobs.

EDIT: the img tags didn't work the first time - had to fix.

OK, I promised to make some others feel good about their racks by showing mine.

My FOH rack and table. There are 3 more computers (two Dell laptops and an HP netbook) that go on that table, too. It gets crowded. A second table is added to the right, and that's where the playback laptop goes.
http://dc226.4shared.com/img/274735310/72bf90de/DSCN3091.JPG?rnd=0.8088546540916113

A better view of the front of the FOH rack. Yes, those are E-machines computers mounted into my FOH rack. They add a certain something, don't you think? I think they go nicely with the "boutique shelf" I installed. Much this customization is temporary, but it gets the job done for now. Some paint is in order, though.

The mixer and topside spaghetti. Still a bit of neatening to do on Wednesday.

The amp/wireless rack. Need to put some blanks in to fill the empty slots. The receiver on top is for our backup lav. It's not rackable, so it stows in back for transit.

This 2nd pic is the FOH & monitor EQs with single CD player rack and Monitor amp/power rack. The Power strip is a dual circuit 20 amp per side. There is a second same power strip on the back that the front one can plug into when only using 2 vice 4 supplying circuits. I also have a spare PLX1804 in my DJ rack that I can add to the monitor rack if needed.

Here's the rear of the FX/comps and the Main Amp racks. Yes, some mess, but the FOH processors are all fed by insert snakes left attached. The amp rack currently only uses 2 of the sdpeakon outs using 4 wire connections to seperately feed the tops and subs. The other 2 speakons were leftover from when the monitor amp was connected. The extra XLR is was a subwoofer input left from when I had the DRPA in the FOH rack.

This is the rear of the EQ/CD player rack with I/O panel. Needed the TRS locking jacks for the monitor in from the mixer, although I do have some xlr to trs adapter cables. There are some extra cables tie-wrapped to use the panel for two more EQ channels.

Below that is the back of the monitor amp/power rack showing an I/O panel setup for 4 monitor mixes although only 2 are being used.

In my amp racks, instead of having patch panels for signal inputs, I have drive snakes that stow inside of them.  I would like to have panels for the speaker outputs but it's not very high on my wish list yet.  Probably that panel is somewhere below getting rid of the yellow power strip that supplies all but the subwoofers!  Wink

Of all the FOH racks I've had over the years, this is my favorite.  I needed two 20U racks to make the platform for the desk to sit on and I have very minimal outboard gear.  I got to make a rack full of all the stuff you never have enough of.

Top to bottom:

Littlite
Courtesy outlets
Sliding shelf for phone, iPod, Power Mute (bonus points for whomever guesses what that's for)
9pr panel so I can inject signal from FOH

(2) 4U drawers

And BTW, how friggin tall are you that you needed 2 20sp racks for a console stand! Shocked

I'm 6'4" and that would be a little too tall for me. I use a 12/20 space for my 01v and it's just right, but it's also racked so that it sits flush with the top of the rack. I wouldn't want it any taller.

I'm 6'3".  Keep in mind these are rack inserts only.  Pulled out of their ATA style surrounds. 18U is my preference but the shop only had shallow 18U inserts when we did the build so I went with 20.  Most people wouldn't like it but it saves me a bunch of tendonitis.

Title: Midi Mute
Post by: Jake Scudder on June 18, 2010, 02:41:18 PM
The Power Mute is being used as a midi mute.  Since the desk is triggering QLab I need a way to be able to move around to different snapshots without firing the sound cues.

The midi connections are all in a booth so an actual midi mute isn't practical.  Instead, we just adapted a standard 5 pin midi cable to XLR, circuited that through two of my dry lines (the 9 pair panel), and used the Power Mute.

One of these or similar, using black tape that produces white lettering:

http://www.amazon.com/Brother-PT-1880-Advanced-Deluxe-Labele r/dp/B000JVHH9W

I use one to wrap labels around mics, mic cables, stands, etc., and sometimes use clear shrink wrap over that, but IIR, Brother is making some heavier duty label tape stock now too.  Comes in 3-4 widths as well as white and clear.

Hey Mike,

Yes, John is correct I got a version of a Brother labeler that supported white on clear labeling.

Pretty much, the U15 processor just alone isn't powerful enough for what I am doing.  The U15 does have a specific EQ, but of course I probably could have measured it with Smaart and then matched it pretty close even with a value DSP like the BBE DS.

But the big reason for the Unity processor is bi-amping the U15s.  It is much easier to bi-amp them with it since it is made specifically for that.  The inputs of the rack go to the DSP.  The L-R high outs of the DSP go to the Unity processor.

That is actually the next thing to pick up; a PLX3002 for the horn.

Take Care!

I knew I needed some way to easily power the amps while not going as far as a mounted distro.  Plus I wanted to be able to split them up onto 2 circuits.

It just kinda worked well out of dumb luck because the EWI rack I had had a bolt at that perfect height on each side that could be unscrewed and then be used to bolt each quad to each side.

Thanks,

That looks awesome.  I'd love to hear all those GX amps running.  I've got a GX3 I use to power two small Yamahas all the time.  I love it.  Man, thats a lot of GX5's.  I'm super curious how you use them.

The 2 in the 4-space rack are for 4 monitor mixes, pushing 4-5 CM12V's. The one in the rack with the PLX3102 and the connection panel is for the mains, the PLX runs a pair of SRX718's. If I need a bigger amp for mains I'll pull the GX5 and replace it with a PLX3602... But that hasn't happened yet. Great amps.

Here are my racks for my Meyer setup.

FOH is all the way to the left.  Monitors are in the middle.
I set this up to run a pair of UPA's per side in stereo over a 1ea 650 sub per side.  And four independent UM-1C monitor mixes.  I've been doing mostly Acoustic gigs as of late so I am going to reorganize what I need into one rack.

Actually the issue is sloppy reply posts from FLAT VIEW users who simply post replies at the bottom.

Flat view for index, tree view for the topics.  It works more the threaded discussions on UseNet.

True enough.  But I'd feel really bad about cutting up someone's hard work when something breaks.  Zip ties are much easier to replace. Wink

--------------

Further thoughts:  The pictured rack was built for the current Broadway run of "Fences" starring Denzel Washington.  It is the Mult Distro (hub for all i/o) and EQ Rack (2x Galileo plus a spare) all in one.  These are usually two separate racks so space was a little tight with all of the copper.  It had to be condensed to a single rack because ampland was being installed up on a jump in a very small space.

I only did the show build so it was imperative that the production crew be able to look at the back of that rack and have it just "make sense".  Inevitably something will be rerouted or added once on site so neatness and labeling are crucial.

The trouble with zip ties (or ty-raps) is that they tend to cut up your hands when you're working inside the rack.  No such problems with lacing twine.

index.php/fa/31032/0/

This isn't my work, and when this picture was taken, it was still a work in progress.  Once all the wires are added, the releasable ty-raps will be removed, and more lacing twine added.
Whether using ty-raps or lacing twine, wire bundles can be a work of art.

Hey Devin,
If you're me you draw it up in Stardraw and send it to Whirlwind to have it made...that's where the ones in the pics came from and tey turned out great!  I have used other custom panel shops for a couple of other projects that did almost the same thing and they just didn't come out quite as nice so I'm willing to pay the little extra $$ to have them done right!

I can't speak to where Jared got his, however, Hosa makes an IEC "Y" cable that is held in decent regard around here.

(BTW, you might want to append your full family name to your handle - not sure that just initials are OK with the board rules).

Best regards,

Yep, they're from Hosa. I'm not a fan of their signal cables, but they have some amazingly useful power adapters and cables and stuff. The little Y's made my racks much neater and made me much happier. If your local Guitar Center has any left in stock, they should be on clearance for about a buck each.

Hosa also makes a NEMA 5-15 to IEC C13 adapter. If you're running a single amp, or powered speaker, whatever... You plug the little adapter into an appropriate length of extension cord, and bam, it's an IEC power cable. Awesome.

You plug any IEC cable into an appropriate length of extension cord, and bam, it's an IEC power cable. The adapter plus an Edison receptacle will stick out pretty far from the gear and be more vulnerable.

I prefer short TRS-XLR cables over adapters for the same reason.

The highest a standard Edison connector like that (5-15 plug) could be rated for is 15A.  As long as your amp's maximum power requirements fall below that amperage, you should be fine.

The second pic shows what the back of the rack used to look like. I got tired of all the excess cable. I had those 4 plugged into a quad that just used to sit in the bottom of the case.

We've always just mounted the quad boxes to the the sides of the racks to keep them out of the way. Then again all of ours flip up on the back panel when transporting.

Probably has more to do with the fact that they are loaded down to the point where the back panel is full of NL8s for tops and NL4s for subs and a ton of fans plus the twist locks for power though.

Im not sure what they are called, but I would check some of the electrical supply stores in your area. I know that they are used for mounting all types of elec boxes in stud walls. The brackets have two seperate parts that slide into one another so that they are adjustable for different stud spacing. The tabs you see on the sides actually fold down flat, so you can adjust them as well.

This is my FOH rack. 01v96VCM, ADA8000, DEQ2496 and a feedback destroyer I never use..

I tried to find the smallest rack possible. Only problem is that I have to connect and disconnect the ADAT cables and powercable on the 01v96 because it is REALLY thight..

I also have modified my ADA8000 so it`s inputs and outputs are on the backside patchpanel.

I made a powerbox today so I only need one powercable to power the whole rack.

Controlled tension and the cut end is retracted below the surface of the pawls (no cutting up your hand).
