Have a single JBL MP418SP that has its crown amp take a dump and blow up the driver in the process. The unit had no signal at the time. The fuse did not blow. The driver caught fire and the amp module now has a solid Clip light and blinking fault. Fault is blinking for channel 2.
I know this has been a long running issue..
I will recone the driver.
The amp module is where I have questions of what to do with it. What do you think happened and how can it be repaired?
This is SOP for these amps. They are useful for mooring a modestly sized dinghy.
When I rebuild these I replace all the SMD emitter resistors with standard WW types (and of course replace all the blown semis). Also remove the triac crowbar circuit (Crown did this in the later ones).
Often the arcing in the blowup destroys the speaker relay as well. So far none of my rebuilds have bounced (touch wood).

what cost am I looking at here do you think? for something you would do...I know its a true piece, but it works well enough when it worked I would like to save it if the costs are not too high. I could ship if off to you for not too much I am sure.
Best you find a competent local tech to fix it - these things are well documented (I'm in the wrong country anyway).

I called a few placed but they say oh...we charge $100 to diagnose and $90 after that...
That gets expensive fast if they dont know what they are doing specifically.
The fees quoted are not out of line these days. Did you contact JBL directly?

Yes, the rep I got said that it was NOT common and that they are sorry for my problems. The cost would be between $250 base rate to -$450 it sounds like. The rep was not helpful at all.
I suppose how one defines "helpful" enters into it....

Call Crown direct... JBL has nothing to do with the repair of these amps.

WOW! i cant believe Crown told you that! that sucks! they built them for JBL... the amp is just simply a CE2000 in a different box.
Your next step is to just find the nearest "authorized" service center... see if they'll fix it? i know my local QSC guy is authorized Crown aswell... and he would fix one for me!
Update...Crown has told me they do not and cannot work on the JBL MP418SP amp modules. They informed me they do not stock the parts for it nor do they have the ability and JBL must service it even thought it is Crown technology.
Bummer. The JBL service centers near me say it can be anywhere from $250-$600 to save just one from this type of blow up.
