Title: Lincoln Hall/ D&B Q1 review
Post by: (Brian) Frost on November 22, 2010, 02:43:57 PM
I have read a fair amount about the newer club The Lincoln Hall in Chicago, and Ive heard and used large D&B rigs numerous times and always liked the results.  I was however worried that they put a line array in a small club that it didnt belong.  After seeing what turned out to be a great concert there last week, I can say that I was COMPLETELY WRONG.  I am completely blown away by the D&B Q rig they put in the club. I walked to most areas of the club during the show. There are no front fills, and I didnt need them.  There are floor stacked subs, and even right in front of them I felt the subs but they sounded great and didnt overpower the tops.  There is an amazing blend between the tops and the stage volume, a cohesiveness to the stage the PA and the room I havnt heard before in a 400 seat club.  Very well done Lincoln Hall.  Very Well done D&B.

How many a side did they put up there?

I believe it's 3 Q1s and 1 Q7 per side with 2 B2s per side.

I was skeptical about the trim height of the system in that room.  It's necessary to hit the balcony (or upper level or whatever we'll call it), but in a small club, I was concerned about not having that rock impact on the ground.  The acoustics of the room play nicely into the system though (although I still would have probably preferred two more boxes per side for a bit more vertical coverage and a little less height from the audience on the floor).  At some point club owners run out of money, but it's still nice to see the owners putting so much care into the technical facilities of a venue.

I also had the opportunity to use a 3 Q1/1Q7 a side system at a festival under a tent, last summer.
I have been very impressed by the hi/mid pattern control of this system. We all know how important it is under a vinyl roof.
Lot's of headroom and very nice tone too.
It was with an electro/pop act, 7 piece band, with lot's of sequences, for a crowd of ~1000. It got loud enough without any major problems or limitations.

Looking forward to use d&b systems again, as I have never been disappointed by their products.

Cheers.

Dan.

The SC48 at FOH is a nice touch too. The system has plenty of get up and go for my show, and as usual, sounded great. I had a whopping 2 EQ cuts on the whole system.

Hi guys,

You were close, we have 3 - Q1s and 1 - Q10s and 2 - B2s per side.
This gets the job done with all of the acoustic panels and the insulated roof.
Its one of my favorite places to mix anywhere.
Thanks for the review.

I've been fortunate enough to do 2 shows there, and both times the crew there was every bit as awesome as the gear.

The q isn´t a bad one. I´ve heard it a lot of times and in small configurations the sound was good. Don´t try to hang it flat what you have to do in longer lines! Max 4 top´s flown sbs works great for aprox 1000 listners and never put q7 or q10 as downfill. Set these boxes as an infill with correct ta. Then never use the 2 10" q´s only with b2 intstead you want to have a gap in your fr. And at last see the max spl on their as an max peak one in your plan. After all you´ll get a good result.
FYI the german q(kuh/cow)is a flexible system but it can´t be a specialist for all of them

From all your posts, it seems like you typically politely bash d&b, which is fine. But i have hung more then 4 Q1 with great results, to each his own!

Ha, that´s your interpretation. d&b is not mine but it sounds well like eaw, adamson, EV and all the other´s in correct installation. That´s all & nothin more

How high is the ceiling?

its rather high, there is a balcony that runs around the top but it is so high it and not very deep that no one is really 'under' it.  I would guess the ceiling is 35 ft maybe.
