Title: UR4D, UR1 dropouts UR2 totally stable?
Post by: Art Williams on August 04, 2015, 03:36:39 PM
Hey I hope someone can help a little bit. Last week I was using my normal UR4D setup, Paddle antennas, etc. while using the Handheld transmitter I had full RF blue lights and all no problems audio worked great no issue. When I switched over to using a Beltpack transmitter with an XLR to TA4F I kept having audio dropouts. again I had great RF but the audio would just drop. I did notice as I was having drops the lower section of the receiver display (tonekey area) was changing from Nm to O and I saw a +5 at some point. I've actually never run into this situation so I'm not sure what to do to keep the issue from happening again. I don't believe I was over driving the transmitter so I don't know what causes those changes to occur in the tone key section.
Any help or insight can help
Thanks

Did you remember to turn off the hand held before switching to the belt pack? Sounds like there were two transmitters on or near (within 100kHz) the same frequency.

No, no intermod issues and no HH and BP we're not on at the same time.

Mic element known to be good? A bad mic cable would tend to make rather noticeable noise, but should be checked anyway.

Did the pilot tone settings of the belt pack match that of receiver?

Batteries new?

Was the mic a dynamic or condenser?

I have experienced a few instances of this sort of thing and the issue turned out to be a broken UR1 antenna connector pin.  They were barely making contact with the part of the pin stuck in the socket.

Plausible but I tried 3 different belt packs and 3 different receivers
I'll check all the BP antenna connections.

Hmmm. Have you tried toggling the UR1 RF power up or down?

What were you feeding into the XLR?

I'll bet a jelly doughnut that it's the XLR to TA4F adapter cable. They don't use the power from the beltpack, which means there won't be a pop in the audio if the cable is intermittent.

Hmmm... What was it that was the same on all the testing of belt pack transmitters?

Mic level program, DI'd Aux Feed.
I do this all the time with my Sennheiser stuff.
Watch to make sure I don't overdrive transmitter, etc...
Mac also used different TA4F cables, only thing not changed was 1/4 TS and DI but they also never moved so don't "think" that should have caused it.

I can't seem to recreate the problem in shop, so I guess I'll find out this weekend...running 4 RF guitars on TA4F to 1/4 cables.

i asked mostly because i was wondering if perhaps there was some very high frequency content in there that was messing with the pilot tone.  i know it's a reach, but it seemed like something to at least rule out.

it'll be interesting to see if it works just fine with the 1/4" adapters....
