Greetings, don't think this has been discussed recently ... here goes.
Like many of us, my media player is critical for system tuning, muso loops and playback between live sets.
Last week, my iPod Touch 4G 64GB came up missing after a gig. Any suggestions on a replacement....other than another Touch?
Not that I was at all unhappy with my Touch. The most important thing to me: When docked, it put out great quality audio. Particulary with "lossless" files.
I just want to learn a little about possible iPod alternatives.

....when connected to a Wi-Fi network.
Unfortunately, the new "owner" is not likely to come within range of the device's configured networks, and, connecting to an open network requires user action which would be prevented by the lockscreen.

I've got one of these - and love it. It's a Samsung Galaxy Player 5. The 5" screen makes all the difference in the world, and is just big enough to comfortably put in your front jeans pocket.
I use mine for everything (internet, Facebook, and video streaming football games) and even have it set up as a voIP phone with Google Voice (free calls and texts to any number in the US - land, cell, whatever). The cell phone contract gets cancelled this month.
I haven't tried out FLAC files on it (it's supposed to support them) but did load up some MP3's on a MicroSD card and they sound fine. (Oh yeah - it has a card slot). It has a rudimentary DJ app that will let you crossfade and beat sync but I haven't tried it out yet.
Wifi only - but I actually like this Samsung so much that I bought a little T-Mobile hotspot for the car and when I'm outdoors. It's never without service.
Currently $239. There's a 4" version for $199.

For a cheap system tuning option. less money to walk off with, and not many people will really want to walk off with it.
shows up on your computer as a hard drive. drag and drop, and it plays them.
You can also expand the memory by throwing a Micro SD card in there if you need more than the space included.

The problem with running from an iPod/3.5mm device is quality. I use my iPhone but someone i know told me to try using the video cable for the iPhone and modify it. It's got the 30 pin bit that goes into the iPod/iPhone on one end and normaly rca red,white as well as yellow (video). However I've replace the red/whit with Neutrik XLR jacks. The difference using this compared to 3.5mm to 1/4" is huge (for me)

I use a Sony Walkman, it syncs with the latest version of windows media player, and they are cheap, work easily, sound great. Some of the others I tried would not transfer my playlists from media player. It looks just like one of the touch versions, but has no touch features, everything is manual.

Ditto on the SanDisk products. Easy to use and they sound good, too. Decent but not spectacular battery life.

Bill, thanks to you I'm considering the Samsung Galaxy Player 4. It uses a desirable Wolfson DAC, and reviews say that it sounds wonderful. FYI, the GP5 uses a Yamaha DAC, as does my Galaxy S2 smartphone.
Adam and Tim M., I'm a little nervous of the Sansa audio quality, but I'll look into them further. Thank you for the suggestion.
Chris, I used a SendStation PocketDock with my iPod. Great sound quality with simultaneous charging. I plugged into my Radial JPC, and sent the nice, hot balanced output onward to my A&H iDR-32.
David, in my experience Sony makes top-shelf gear, so I need to read up on the Walkman. Thanks for the idea.

I'm also toying around with the idea of running Traktor Duo on my notebook, and pushing the audio through a Fiio E10 DAC. The functionality of Traktor would be a boon to my "playback between sets" spec.

Hi Tim-
My "other" player is a Philips. It sounds inferior to the Sanza Fuze, playing the same files. I don't know whose DAC chip SanDisk uses, but to my ear it sounds much like a Nano.
I use the Philips in my car, now. I'm buying another Fuze, although I like the Galaxy that Bill mentioned.

I found my iPod Touch, so I'll continue to do playback from there...until such time as it again goes AWOL :)
Before it re-appeared, I tried PC DJ DEX 2 and Traktor Pro 2. Neither could bet "plain old" Winamp for my needs.
I did, however, go with the FIIO E10 DAC. The improvement in SQ over my XPS-M1210 internal sound card was immediately noticable. Highly recommended!
