Title: What Gear Would You Endorse?
Post by: [x] on September 29, 2005, 09:27:55 AM
I know in this business everyone has their favorite this, or their favorite that, but if you were to buy it all over again, what gear would you choose? Put another way: What brands of gear would you swear up and down by?

Example: FBT MaxX speakers

That's a pretty loaded question.  We all have our favorites.  and someone will rebut everyone's favorites.  So I will go out on a limb...

Non Pro audio answer: Yamaha Guitars!
I love 'em.  I have one guitar that I have had for about 22-23 years.  It plays awesome and sounds great.  It has nice inlays and the finish is top notch other than the fact that it has 23 years of abuse on it.  I have bought many guitars but this is the one I can't get rid of.  They just don't build them like this anymore, at least not short of about $2000.

The usual suspects...

EAW tops and Danley subs
Midas boards and EZ-tilts
QSC amps
BSS and KT processing
TC Electronics FX
Neumann, Shure and Audix mics (ok...a few Sennheisers)
Whirlwind cables
Ramlatch mutlipin connectors
Neutrik cable connectors
Ulimate stands

So if anybody from any of these companies wants me, I am yours for the asking (and the free equipment of course... Shocked)

- ATM Pro37R Condenser Mic. The best workhorse and most versitile little beast I've seen down the years - for the least $$.
- QSC amps in general. A VAST improvement over their earliest stuff! Great service and assistance when needed as well.
- Shure Beta 57 and 58. Really nice step up from the SM series.
- Sony MDRV6 Headphones. Made me a believer that Sony could put out a sonically decent product. Best noise cancelling in any headset I've owned yet.
- Second the Speakons. Add the combo XLR and 1/4" jack!
- EWI BugKatcher cable tester. Really the best.
- Neutrik Minirator. My system troubleshooter and general lifesaver.
(added:) - The Rane MA6. Heavy as Heck, but where else can you get 6 channels of audio (3 channels bridged) for that kind of money in a 3U rack space - and not be 18" long? Even with no level control.. still the best answer for those smaller corporates, modest monitor amp duty, and multi-speaker zone applications. (yes, there are better and newer, but NOT in that price range..

You know Evan.. you've only listed 2 things there that are not likely to be part of your inventory for a very long time - the xl4 and heritage.

You've got good sense in what you've bought and how you market and handle yourself.

Took me 10 years to get to the point where I could buy a verona & kt helix - but all the other stuff you've listed you can get bit by bit.

I'd lay a bet that within 10 years you'd have most of the stuff you've listed. And show me another 27yo who would have that kind of stuff !

I don't post often here but I read heaps - which is why I kinda feel that I know you but you wouldn't know me from a bar of soap.

Keep up the good work !

Speakers: Meyer powered speakers (MSL4, DS4, 650P, etc.)

Console:  Amek Recall RN (too bad they aren't making this anymore - those Neve designed preamps and EQs sound great)

Mics:  Shure KSM line (32, 137, 141).  Great line of mics.

Processing:  BSS Soundweb (incredibly versatile tool).

It would be nice if you restricted your listings to gear that you personally use or have heard in-situation. Wet gear dreams can be fun but when you wake up all you have is what you have or what you know.

What gear would I endorse? That is an easy one to answer. I would endorse the gear given to me for free from the manufacturer, of course!
Everything that is in my inventory now, I have had to paid for. Naturally, that means that I buy what I like, since I am voting for it with my dollars.
Not to sound mercenary, but if any manufacturers out there want to
give me some free gear, please PM me. Seriously...

These brands are all equipment I have and use. The stuff I dream about hasn't been invented yet.

I'm a bit with Mark here.
An endorsement is not something that would be given without getting something in return.

In a past life I had an endorsement by a local company that was the local distributor for MI gear.
So the pickups in my Bass and the cabs I played through, and the strings I used, all cost me zip!
If you ever played Bass for a living and had to buy your own strings, back in the 80's, you would realise what this was worth.

I have had many problems with lots of brands, both up and downmarket, but I have also had a lot of success with both ends of the market.

If I was to get on my high horse and preach about the benefits of a brand I would not only be judging the actual hardware. To me, backup support and knowledgeable staff are worth more than a great piece of hardware by itself.

So to that end, I would probably nominate the EV, Dynacord, Midas and KT brands, as the staff at the local importer really know their products and actually seem to care about the final outcome.

A lot of other companies seem to be just interested in getting a sale.

My 0.02c worth (well actually, It would cost a lot more than that! Laughing )

hmmm...
Yorkville subs

Yamaha tops (as far as small mains, or monitor use)
Shure mics
Crown amps
DBX processing
Peavey Eq's (love that FLS Smile )

Mics: Shure Beta, Beyer M201
Consoles: Yamaha Digital
EQ: Lake Mesa, BSS 960
Processing: XTA DP, Lake Contour/Mesa
Amps: LabGruppen fP (I'd happily take iTechs for most applications too I can't 'endorse' as I haven't used them)
Speakers: L'Acoustics, Nexo, D&B, JBL VerTec (SRx700 waiting on), EAW NT

That seems like a lot of speaker companies, but I've had good results on all of them that I've been happy with and the band have been happy with.  Plus all of them are accepted, supported and reliable.
