Title: ?flying with mics in or Out of Waterproof Cases
Post by: Earl F Young on March 20, 2017, 04:09:07 PM
Should mics be flown in stock vinyl pouch if in cabin?
In pressurized case, if checked- in belly of plane?

Pelican, SKB, Plano o-ring waterproof, relief valve case design

I am not an expert on aircraft, but I am pretty sure the baggage hold is pressurized just like the cabin is. Otherwise all your sealed containers (shampoo, etc) would blow up. I have well over 300 segments on my measurement mics, sometimes in my carry on, sometimes in my pelican tool case.  I haven't noticed any ill affects.

Correcto!  Your mics may get cold though but won't freeze.  You can get mic scarfs on Amazon.  Seismic Audio sells them in 12 packs.

A "scarf" does not do a lot of good on anything that does not produce heat.

Mics would get cold pretty quick on a plane flight-especially during the winter.

They would probably be cold before they ever get on the plane.

I have unique luggage so it's more often then not that I see it being unloaded/loaded from the plane.  I've seen it baked for hours at Phoenix, sitting in pouring rain in Charleston and left out at -20 in Minneapolis.  So have learned to consider such things when traveling with gear.
Likewise consider the ordeal your gear has already been through just getting from the factory to you in the first place -Containers, hot/cold trucks, UPS etc...  There's usually very little if not any climate control for merchandise freight!

Guess my question wasn't quite clear -or I misunderstood your reply.
is there detriment in/on mics being in a Pelican* (or similar) pressurized *1510 case?

Not that I've found.  The internal pressure of the case is uniform to all the things inside and *should* be at the pressure as when it was closed.

I think the biggest enemy of mics, or any transducers or electronics, is condensation, which occurs when cold-soaked gear is brought into a warmer, humid environment. A (semi) sealed case, such as a Pelican case, will help with that. A bag of silica gel desiccant will make it even better. And yes, the cargo holds of airliners are pressurized. People's pets travel down there.

Best,

--Frank

Mics get pretty cold in the truck delivering them to the store (or warehouse, or home) in winter too.
