RIP Ray "Dr. Hook" Sawyer. He was 81.
Perhaps best known for "Cover of the Rolling Stone" and "Sylvia's Mother", I remember him for his covers of Shel Silverstien's "Freaking at the Freaker's Ball" and "I Got Stoned and I Missed It."

Worked with them several times here in the mid-west. Always a good time.

2019 says goodbye to Alan R. Perlman , founder of ARP instruments whose products like the Odyssey, 2600, PRO Soloist, Quadra and the Solina String Ensemble (designed by Eminent) were instrumental in the birth of electronic music and synthesizers in other popular music. Tony Banks, Kraftwerk, Jean Michel Jarre and Joy Division were just some famous users of ARP equipment.

"Sylvia's Mother"
A poignant song for those of us who toured during the days of Pay Phones and Long Distance Fees. Not sure the lyrics would "ring" the same if introduced today.

Broadway and film actress Carol Channing passed yesterday, age 97... Great quote from her:
“I’ll never forget it, because it came over me so strongly,” Channing recalled the feeling of stepping into a theater for the first time. “This is a temple. This is a cathedral. It’s a mosque ... This is for people who have gotten a glimpse of creation and all they do is recreate it. I stood there and wanted to kiss the floorboards.”
RIP, Dolly.

That is a great quote! She had a great run.

We say goodbye to a jazz/soul great today James Ingram passed at 66. Too young.
He performed in 1983 at a Jazz Festival in Ft. Lauderdale sponsored by pioneering Smooth Jazz format station WLVE. Patti Austin played with James and solo.

I was 14 when they released Music for the jilted generation.
In the name of all that's holy, WHAT an album.
Add in The fat of the land and you basically have the soundtrack I listened to for years.

Hal Blaine has passed away at 90. He came up with the name "The Wrecking Crew" for the famous group of studio musicians in the '70s. In the statement from his family, "May he rest forever on 2 and 4". There is a very long list of hits he drummed on and people he worked with.

The world lost Kyle Yorlets of the upcoming band Carverton in early February. His life was stolen from him at the young age of 24 in Nashville Tennessee. I had the privilege to work with him from 9th grade as one of my students all the way to the last month of his life. One of the last shows he ever played was to come home back to Carlisle and grace our stage as an alumni and blew us all away. My friend was the most gracious musician I've ever met and worked with and I've worked with alot of international gems.
The lost is still over whelming 5 weeks later . . .
As a fellow engineer to this industry, the life we walk is bitter sweet. The sweet is unparalleled when entrusted to hold these artists in the tip of our fingers. The bitter is when we have to say goodbye and left with only the beautiful haunting sonic memories of those moments when a show found everyone in the house tied together. 25 years into this profession and there's nothing I would rather do in life. That quote from above posts is true.
Do your souls a favor . . .call or text your favorite local artist if you can and remind them what their passion and determination means to you as an engineer . . . as a fellow human being. Life changes in the blink of an eye and its all too short. Without these creative folks, our passion to mix and do what we do would be stuck without wheels. For that I will always owe . . .
Peace my fellow audioKnights

Thanks for the beautiful music, which is always a good start to a gig.

This is a sad time for PSW. For clarification, it was David Turner who passed. David was an active member here, whom I had the great opportunity to work with on a few shows.

Ginger Baker, RIP: BBC News report (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-49827436)

I picked up a bass and ran Politician in memory of Jack and Ginger. Then listened to Live Cream Vol 2. That was influential stuff for me as a bass player.

RIP Larry Junstrum. Bassist for 38 Special and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Age 70 is too soon...

No disrespect intended, but I think, by making it to age 80, Mr. Baker beat the odds.

Give the life he led, it certainly was good, yes.

Tracy Arrington passed yesterday. Many of you won't know of him. He was the long time bass player for Curtis Salgado. A stud player, great vocalist and a sweet human being. TA held it down for many of the top blues and R&B acts coming through the northwest looking for support. He's already missed in these parts. Died on the table undergoing a procedure.
Damn he's gone too soon.

Too sad, loved little feet. Saw them last time at a festival with Little Feet.
"there's a fat man in the bathtub" not anymore

Paul was the guitarist and front man. Kenny Gradney is the bass player. Hard to imagine Feat continuing without Paul though. RIP Paul. You were an original.

IIRC Paul was originally hired as bassist although he was more proficient on guitar. I dont recall when Kenny came on board as bassist and Paul went to 6 strings.

Kenny was in there pretty early. I always assumed he was the original. Saw them a couple of times prior to the night Lowell died and Kenny was always the guy. I caught the Wesleyan University show (Middletown, CT) just prior to Lowell's passing and they were on fire. Saw them a few times after and while good, it was never as good...
ah google is your friend... Roy Estrada was the founding bassist. Kenny came in 1972.
Which caused me to go looking at Bill Payne - good lord that man has discography!

One of my favorite bands. Hard to believe it has been two years since Malcolm passed. I know they had more commercial success with Brian Johnson, but I thought their music was more dynamic with Bon.

Another victim of early onset Alzheimer's, John Mann of the Vancouver band Spirit of the West, passed away yesterday.
https://www.fyimusicnews.ca/articles/2019/11/20/rip-john-mann-spirit-west
I first heard of the band about 30 years ago, when they were still a trio. They flew into Halifax to do their first East Coast tour, and rented a PA from me. After driving 5 hours to Sydney in a van for the first gig, they were informed by the club owner that the gig had been cancelled, "Didn't your agent tell you?" They salvaged the 2-week trip with a weekend in a bar just outside Halifax, and then a one week residency at Pub Flamingo downtown. The Flamingo had a complete installed system, but the band's soundman (whose name I have long since forgotten, sorry) didn't care for the house console (a Yamaha MC2402) and wanted to rent my Soundcraft for the week. Feeling bad for the band after the fiasco in Sydney, I gave it to them, no charge, and of course went to see them in person.
One of the songs John sang was Political (video at the link above), and the performance has stuck with me all these years.
