Title: What are you listening to? Home Theater or Stereo.
Post by: Doug Fowler on June 30, 2018, 05:13:13 PM
Let’s hear it!  (groan.....)

I keep it simple with lots of value. BIC DV-64, SV Sound PB-12 sub. No center or surrounds ATM, but I do have 3x BIC center channel which I could use for those tasks. That center channel box has been called the best center channel anywhere value by a lot of people.

Mine are mostly leftovers: L+R are a pair of Tannoy SRM-12B (1980 vintage) I was given by my employer many moons ago, surrounds are some odd Radio Shack speaker I got a deal on, and center is an EV EVID6.2 left over from an install. No sub, but it's a very small living room.

LR Polk Monitor 10Bs, no subs, they have pretty good low end. Some kind of Polk center, and some Tannoy 4.5 monitors for surround. I've had the Polks a long time, at least 25 years, past that I don't remember. The TV has been changed a couple of times and is currently a 60" Panasonic plasma, and I'm on my second Yamaha receiver after a Sansui long ago. The new Yamaha is to get the HDMI routing since the TV is all HDMI. At the same time I added a Blu Ray player I've never used.

Listen to music mostly in my basement at the computer- Computer>SB Live>Old Teac 10 band EQ>Behringer CX2310 Xover> Carvin HD3000(sub) Optimus sub with Dayton 12" dual VC, Carvin HD1500(mains) Boston CR8's. Sounds pretty freaking good, amp were taken out of PA service a few years ago when replaced by Crowns, so might as well regulate them to my home system.

No TV in my house. Both computers on my desk go through equator monitors with a presonus tremblor sub.

Old standby Onkyo surround receiver into four Paradigm Titan speakers, a JBL center and a Jamo sub. I'll be swapping out the front two Titans for Paradigm Mini Mk III speakers and moving one of the Titans to the center at some point, and replacing the Jamo with a Paradigm sub when I find the correct replacement driver.

Integra preamp, carver amps, infinity Kappa's up front,  smaller infinity's in the back, current sub is a SVS 4000 it is clean ans deep.  Oppo Blu ray and a new 4k Apple TV for sources.

Playing in the basement with some JBL SR-X's and a rack full of Samson amps, 120" Stewart screen and a JVC D-ILA projector.  Want to get some Danley DTS-10 sub.  Have 2 JBL Synthesis dual 15 subs that just don't get low by modern standards.

Our only stereo system in the house used for movies and music is:

Tannoy 10 DMT series two monitors
Hafler DH110 preamp
Hafler DH200 power amp
Sony Blueray DVD player and an older Pioneer CD player that sounds way better playing CD's than the Sony Blueray.

I built both the Hafler units from the kits and a few years ago went through and re-capped them both.

I originally built and used the DH200 in the early 1980's to run JBL2402 bullet tweeters the sound system I had at the time.

I have a powered JBL system for mix down and listening in my office.

The tv is a Yamaha surround receiver to a pair of Snell A2s, a center bar, a sub, and side & rear speakers.

Late 80's/early 90's Techincs SA-X900L combined tuner/amp/dual cassette with a couple of cheapo Sansui speakers with the optional Technics turntable and a old Sony CD changer.
Cost me nought and sounds relatively good.
Has an extra Aux input so useful for attaching modern gear up to it, currently a Lidl UnPNP streaming box.

My basement is a bit on the small side so my setup just fits the spacing needed for work, music (Playback/Practice/Recording) & movies. All purchased new over time since 1974.

Demon 3803 AVR; Samsung BRDVD Player
        Polk RM7500 Series Frt/Cntr/Surrx4 Speakers (1”HF, 5.25”LF)
Polk RM7500 Series Sub (Dual 12”)
        Project Debut & Music Hall 5 TT’s
        Akai GX747 & Technics X2000 R2R’s

Still sounds “d@mn good” to me....so I think I’ll keep it for a bit longer (my son certainly hopes so.. :D)

Apple TV 4K
Denon AVR
Volt10s from DIY soundgroup in ported enclosures.  No sub atm...  maybe a build in my future but we don’t critically listen to that many movies at home.

I actually listen to a pair of my PA speakers - 6.5" 2-way boxes, 18Sound 6ND430 midbass, DAS M3 HF. 1.6kHz crossover, and a well-treated cabinet.

Amp is an old Akai AM-2250 and it has the matching AT-2250 tuner. There's also a GL-75 turntable.

Sounds quite nice, and gets used for mixing stuff occasionally.
Having measured the amp, there's almost valve (tube) amp levels of 2nd order harmonic distortion.

If we're watching movies, I have the driver from a Tannoy TS10 subwoofer and a Behringer iNuke with the DSP settings dialled in for the sub. I run the sub amp from the second speaker output on the Akai amplifier, which works fine - the speakers are efficient so they never see enough voltage to clip the input stage of the iNuke.

I've a few parts on-hand for my next home HiFi speakers, but the design is TBC. I'd like to cut out the subwoofer and have a pair of main speakers that can dig below 30Hz on their own.

My wife made me put away my stereo equipment because it "looks ugly". lol.

We don't have the luxury of a "bonus room" of any kind. When it was set up it was a Sansui AUD-II integrated amp with a variety of inputs including Minidisc!

Speakers are things that I've built over the years. I have some open-baffle 1.5 ways that I really like. They use old EV Wolverine 8 incher's. I've also had some old Large Advents and several other speakers I've built.

I have a "stereo" for listening to music and a packaged 5.1 JBL rig for the home theater.

Stereo has Soundcraftsmen preamp (recapped, rechipped a couple years ago) and Hafler DH500 amp.  JBL monitors, don't recall the number.

Home theater is an inexpensive Sony system: receiver, 5 cube size speakers and small sub.  It sounds surprising big.  Either my TV or the Comcast cable box no longer passes audio while watching TV or DVD/Blu-ray movies.  Haven't had the time to troubleshoot.

Stereo consists of Adcom amp, preamp, tuner, Marantz CD, Dual turntable, JBL 4410 monitors, a/d/s L570 speakers, and Definitive Technology 15" sub.

The 5.1 setup in our living room had to go. It was old and was missing many of the bells and whistles I was looking for, starting with HDMI I/O...

I now have a Focal Dimension soundbar and subwoofer, an AppleTV and a Philips Buetooth receiver (and a Samsung 55" LED TV) since about 15 months.

All control is done with a Logitech Harmony remote system with Hub and touch remote, as well as an EchoDot for speech remote control (including lights etc.).

Very high WAF (wife acceptance factor) since the setup is very compact and the integrated remote control makes using it very easy.

I don't see "AM talk radio in my car" in the list.

Seriously, I don't listen to music at home. I don't really have a good reason not to. Maybe I'm either too busy to sit down and listen, or I'm too lazy.

In the past, I've used my "lounge level" PA system. What I do now when I want to listen to music is Pandora on my phone, connected via the headphone out directly into a pair of EV ELX112P. I don't have a TV, so "home theater" really isn't an option.

It's more about having background noise than critical listening. And, with kids in the house, there's plenty of background noise already, so I don't play music often. Musical genres typically include classical and contemporary sacred (but not CCM).

Just stereo. And through headphones so that I don't bother anyone else. Sony wireless at work and AKG Bluetooth at home.

I'm spending more time in front of my computer at work so I'm listening to a lot more music. Just listened to CSNY Deja Vu. It's even better than I remembered.

Nothing.  I'm a bit of an oddity amongst my musician friends.  Whilst they all have huge record collections and decent equipment to play it on, I have nothing.
I love live music but have little interest in anything recorded.

In my basement studio for rehearsal and practice (congas) I use old SR equipment that sounds better than all my current gigging gear but is too heavy for my aging back to carry to gigs anymore. EV QRX112 speakers with Crown K1 amp, JBL PRX618XLF sub, a bunch of bales of Roxul mineral wool set up in bass trap locations. For recording and mixing I use RME Babyface, Neumann KH120 nearfields and a home made Linkwitz Thor 12" subwoofer with an Adcom GFA-555 power amp. Sounds great in the 1 foot wide sweet spot. No room in the studio for my old MixWiz or need for all those mic channels, so that is in storage and for source/monitor switching and gain control I use a Midas MR12 and iPad or Android phone to control. The MR12 actually is great for a studio, lots of TRS inputs for computer, DIs, CD, phono preamp and can adjust volume and mix remotely when I am rehearsing or practicing along with recordings recorded at different levels, tiny size, 4 balanced outs for 2 different monitors.
Thinking of getting a big plasma screen as monitor to make it into a very small home theater/workout room.
Other than that, my wife and I usually just use our computers or phones with headphones or a JBL Flip 4 Bluetooth speaker which I also use on my bike (bicycle). Not much time anymore outside work to listen to music at home. Maybe if I ever retire...

For quite some time I used two turbosound iQ8 tops and one iQ15b sub for the tv and stereo.

More stuff than any sane person would have in a home AV system...   :)

My general mood music is from the DirecTV feed and it hits all the rooms and patio, shop.  Dual 18" JBL 2245's in a JBL MD7 sub in den, Dayton 15" powered sub at the end of hallway for bedrooms, Polk powered 12" sub in the shop.  Dbx DriveRack PA2 handles tri-amped den system, another PA2 for the tri-amped HT center,.  Ashly NE24.24 controller for the whole house system.  House system is crossed over at 120hz, patio has Polk Atrium 4's - ended up going near-field on the patio, so I can run patio heaters and fans depending upon the season and hear the TV and music ok without waking up neighbors.  42" flat panel LCD in the shop, open large outside shop door and it can be viewed from patio.

70" LED TV in den.

Main den system is still in-work, vintage stuff.  Will be 4-way sporting 4 x JBL 2245 18's in MD7 enclosures, 4 x JBL 2114 8's, JBL 2226 1" horn/lens & JBL 2404 tweets with a Ashly 4.8SP processor - Phase linear Dual-500 I had restored for bottom end, Clair Brothers PL 700 low mids, PL 300 S2 for highs and a Phase Linear A-30 for the top end.

99% of the time it's in 2ch stereo mode playing DirecTV MC music or TV.

Den:
Onkyo HTIB and Panasonic plasma screen. Everything turns on with one button. Could use better speakers, though.

Office:
Bryston 3B ST
PMC DB1 and TLF1
Lots of OC703 and Roxul

Everywhere else:
JBL EON ONE Pro out of rental inventory. This speaker is just great for everything fun related. Jam sessions, pool parties, drunken karaoke, whatever. . .

Speakers: Quad ESL63
Amp: Electrocompaniet AW250R
Sub: Martin Logan Dynamo 1500x
Room correction: Lyngdorf Roomperfect RP-1. I use it mostly as a glorified sub crossover.
Preamp/USB DAC: McIntosh D100
LP: Technics 1200
Riaa preamp: PS Audio NuWave

I've assembled this system during the years and bought used, ex demo stock, trade deals etc. so it's a lot of sound for the money.
The only thing I paid full price for was the Riaa preamp.

I try to avoid catching the disease we all fear...transferring our standards and values to our private space.
That said...I have a conventional 5.1 utilizing a pair of 35yr old Klipsch Heresy for l/r..and corresponding c/s/sub all Klipsch.
For the pool area and porch I have 3 BGW 750s and more Klipsch...Heresy Industrial Ported...and some all weather driven by a custom API 2520 line amp w/ variable stereo zone outputs...at present in need of a source.
Sitting upstairs un-connected is a pair of 3 panel Magneplanars...accompaning a DC300/IC150/meter thingie. Marantz tuner and Teac half track RtoR. The speakers were a gift to my friend...now deceased..by Cat Stevens..autographed

Recently rehabbed Marantz 2235 Reciever, updated caps, lamps, small parts, Altec Voice of the Theatre cabs, components rebuilt by Great Plains Audio, Sangion Digital HD Radio source and Computer filled with WAV files taken from LPs, I Have a Sound bar and sub and switch them on when watching movies, usually its music. The Voice of the Theatre's were completely stripped, reglued, additional bracing and new Backing plate for speaker with thicker ply, they sound great, its the stereo man, STEREO.

I actually just use the built-in speakers that came with my LG smart tv. TV is only used on the rare ocassion that I want to watch a show when it's airing, or Netflix (pretty rare these days as well). Otherwise, I just use the websites for various networks, and put it through my bose speakers if I'm not feeling lazy.

Office:  M-Audio BX5a that I inherited somewhere along the way.  Connected to my computer via USBPre2 when it's not out in the field.

Media room:  11.1 system using Klipsch 7800 THX (S & L models) for the mains, C, and surrounds.  Danley DTS-20 sub.  Mains are powered by Crown CTS 475 & 875 amps, sub by some other crown amp who's model number I forget.  Processed via a Q-Sys Core 110f with flex io8.  Cinema decoding is done by a marantz preamp processor.  Stereo sources go straight to the Q-Sys.

Vinyl comes via an Elac Miracord 46 into a Radial J33.
Movies and digital music all come from a Plex server or a sonos setup.

The DTS-20 is pretty kick-ass.  It outperforms the full Dolby theater I was in this afternoon.  The Klipsch speakers were largely chosen due to space constraints and the fact that they are closed back models and not dependent on the stud bays for their back loading.  With a little tuning and time alignment it's all pretty nice.  Plenty loud for movies too.  I run separate processing for music and it makes for a nice listening environment too.

Additionally there's an audio-perf cinemascope screen (center channel is beind it) with a da-lite masking system and a JVC RS series projector.  The q-sys allowed me to write software so that when I play a c-scope movie the plex server tells q-sys which then has the screen and projector automatically adjust to the correct display settings.  It's pretty rad.

Listening to my stereo lost it's appeal after having bands and jam sessions playing live in my living room at my beer parties (last century). I haven't thrown a party for a couple decades but still don't listen to music casually. That said I have (60s) music playing on my sat receiver right now because the news is hard to listen to these days.

Over the years I have made a number of enhancements.

My current living room system involves a 65" monitor (have you seen how cheap these got?).

A cheap digital 5.1 surround decoder (cheap is a common theme with me).

Six channels of Hypex class D OEM power amp modules.

A huge (Peavey/AMR PRM-1 studio monitor sub),

A pair of hifi speakers for front left and right (Fourier 6" 2-way),

a pair of studio monitors for rear speakers (Peavey/AMR 308s 8" 3 way),

and the front center channel is an old AR4x box with a modern coaxial driver mounted inside.

It looks a little dodgy but sounds really good on movies.  8)

Timely thread as I've been studying up on the latest trends while upgrading my main (stereo + 5.1) system and the workout system in the basement.  I stopped following audio & home theater reviews at least 15 years ago and let me tell you things have changed a lot since then.  Mostly on the home theater side, but home stereo receivers have changed too.  On the home stereo side, most front ends now offer WiFi so you can stream your music and many are "2.1" meaning that they offer some level of bass management.  On the home theater front, audio/video receivers (AVRs) have changed a lot.  There are different HDMI versions which support the newer audio and video formats.  Then you have WiFi for streaming, and most now offer some form of automatic room tuning using a supplied microphone.  The short version is; be careful buying a used AVR to save money because it's like buying any other piece of tech.  With AVRs, older is definitely not better.

Garage (my first stereo):
NAD receiver
JBL 8" 3-way speakers mounted up in the corners

Computer:
Presonus Firebox
NHT Pro 2.1 powered system

Basement Workout:
Yamaha receiver hand me down
KEF Q150 bookshelf speakers (recent used purchase)
Martin Logan Dynamo 10" sub (recent used purchase)

Living Room stereo & home theater:
OPPO BDP-95 Blu-ray with balanced stereo audio outputs (recent used purchase)
Marantz SR585 receiver. No HDMI connections and only decodes DD.  Works great, but way out of date.
Adcom GFA-555 & Acurus A100X3 power amps.  Good power never goes out of style!
Hales Revelation 3 fullsize mains
Klipsch center channel
Denon surrounds on the walls
Monoprice Monarch 10" 500W 73lb ported sub.  (recent new purchase)
Pioneer 42" 720p plasma

To hear the newer uncompressed audio formats I need to upgrade my AVR.  I also want a larger TV, but I really like the deep blacks of my Pioneer plasma so I haven't decided yet if I want to upgrade all the way to 4k OLED, or get a used, but larger 1080p plasma panel.  All of this is as a result of my figuring that there won't be anything to do this winter so I might as well enjoy my movies.

Edit to add: Movies are now free with no lates fees from the local libraries, hence my reason for upgrading to Blu-ray now.  After watching my first movie in HD, I wish I'd made the upgrade 10 years ago.

I keep it simple with lots of value....

Preface:  Wifey emphatically declared "no more speaker cabinets and wiring all over the house!"  Wiring is now hidden.  Her trade-off was she lost most of a closet in the laundry room.  Mine was to sell my Klipsch LaScalas and many various "other boxes."  It's all good.

---

"Peavey PZS-80 zone amp:

Garage 4 x  Atlas (I think - these are ancient) ceiling flush mount + 1 Sb122

Basement 1 x Peavey IMP100 + 1 Sb122

Outdoors 1x 6"  generic under hang + Sx300 on a stand, as needed

---

JVC RX315 integ. amp + Pyle PSS8 speaker switch

Media room 4 x 6.5" ceiling flush mount Klipsch 10" powered sub
(This is simple stereo, so "front" over sofa wired LR, "far" nearest the 65" TV wired RL - 'effects' sound good to me)

Kitchen/eating 2 x Pyle 6.5" wall flush mount

Bath/tub 1x 6.65" 'stereo dual tweeter' ;) wall flush mount

LR 2 x old-generic 6" wall bracket mount

---

Ripping vinyl:  AT-PL120 into Dell D410 (XP Pro) via XITEL RCA -> USB adapter w/de-click, trim and "all that" apps.

---

When I exercise my "music recovery muscle memory" - aka: DJ skills - in the garage or outside, I  have a lot of options.

I have a pair of Rogers LS 3/5A's that I've owned since the early 80's for L & R with a Paradigm center speaker.
The amp is a Hafler P3000 and the center channel is derived from the L&R "+" terminals through a large 10 ohm resistor.
Interface is an active balancing box that I make, followed by an Aphex Compellor that I added a while back to level out the music vs dialog on movies.
No sub as  we get plenty from our next door neighbour's system, thanks.
Mostly watch TV and movies through this set-up. Music playback sounds great, but I just haven't gotten around to adding an In/Out switch for the center speaker, which can (and does) make stereo mixes sound a little...different. :-\

No sub as  we get plenty from our next door neighbour's system, thanks.

the den has a projection theater setup, and while it's great for movies , it just doesn't do it for me when I want to listen to music, but we make due if it's a video concert.
in my studio/office I'm either on a good set of cans...mix my guitar pedal board/keyboard along with cakewalk etc into an XR18, or if I want to "feel" it...I keep one of the Bose L1compacts sitting on an EV zxa1 12" powered sub..no...it's not stereo, but it'll blister the paint on the walls if I want it to.
my workout room..nother whole approach, the walls are lined with old vintage guitar amps..and one of those cabs is a 2x10/1x15 combo cab..sitting on top of it is an old Peavey powered PA head that I bought back in the late 1980s for small club gigs.. I plug my iphone into it and for hitting the tread mill and bench, it works just fine...old school (grin)

Let’s hear it!  (groan.....)

I have a couple of systems as I benefitted from working at a major audio manufacturer. My HT system consist of a Acurus ACT4 preamp/processor, a ML 532 amp for my Revel Salon 2 speakers, a Lexicon ZX7 for the rest of the channels on my system, which are a Revel Voice 2, 4 Revel Performa 3 M106 as surrounds and 4 shakers on the sofa. Finally I have a Perfoma 3 B112 Sub.

My other system is simpler as it is only Stereo. 2 JBL M2 amplified by 2 ITHD 5000. That is connected directly to a Oppo BDP 105 which I use a s a player and preamp.

I'm listening to the Beatles Decca Audition on UTube

I now understand why they were turned down. Starting to see how important George Martin was to them.

Its a hodgepodge for me...I've never heard it at anywhere near its potential. All of this is in a 12x22 room.

Denon 5.1 Integrated Amp runs these:
L/R - JBL CBT1000 (was a straight trade for Mackie SRM450v1)
C - JBL SP215-9 came out of local church had been hanging since new
Surrounds - 4x JBL 8340 (dumpster recovery from a closed theatre - refoamed all the woofers)

Subs - 2x JBL 4645b run with Crown K2 (got from different sources from people who didn't want them anymore

I also use this setup as a home podcasting rig. A Behringer Flow 8 connected to a PC for streaming is also in this setup.
