Title: LEIXEN I77 - RF frequency sniffer - you can't be without it for this price
Post by: Pete Erskine on June 10, 2015, 06:33:56 PM
This instantly displays the frequency of a nearby transmitter or walkie talkie.  It shows PL tone settings as well.  works up to 1 GHz.  Display is only accurate to 4 places so 450.12345 would show as 450.1235.  Accuracy is adjustable if you want to calibrate.

Works with any transmitter, IFB, mic, in ear TX.

Thank you to Shipley Landiss for this.

After a freq is displayed push another button and transmit a tone on the same freq and PL tone to verify.

Ordered one.  Might be a nice cheap replacement for my current one which can't keep a battery charge for more than 5 minutes.

I purchased something very similar and it only worked with walkie talkies.
Couldn't get reliable frequency reading on wireless mic transmitters.

Do you have to wear mutton chops and a mullet to use it?

This does both easily.

It helps but I just do green hair.

Good to know Pete.

Won't work with most digital modulation schemes.  Seems sorta worthless.  A frequency counter is not a spectrum analyzer.

I got one of the RF Expolorers at a Hamfest for $150.  You can order from China for less.  It doesn't refresh fast nor cover the old legacy T-Band VHF channels but it goes 240Mhz to 1GHZ.

I see they have a model that goes up to 3Ghz at Amazon for $250.00 a much wiser investment.

On the other hand, a spectrum analyzer is not a frequency counter. This isn't an investment, it's under $30. Like a nice lunch. I don't think Pete sees it as a replacement for his $10,000 R&S or $2000 tti analyzers. It has an easy to read display, unlike the RF Explorer, and if you just need to find out what frequency that roving reporter is on it seems like a no brainer at that price.

While there are devices with digital modulation, they are still pretty rare in the production world.

$30.

Placed in cart.  Thanks for the tip, Pete!

My very old Radio Shack handheld PLL counter is acting up, so I hope this will fill its shoes.  PL tone ID seems like a pretty good bonus.

Hey Pete,

Does the tone TX work to open the squelch on UHF-R and/or BTR systems, or is it strictly for PLMR radios?

low power is issue.  1W up easy, not so with 10mW.  Occasionally it does work.  Radio freq and pl tone is great though.

With the 10 mw  I had them sitting one foot apart from each other and the device did not detect.  I know I also had one transmitter found in a church that was in the 700 band and it was not picked up.  Again that was most likely running around the 10 mw.

Yes I did inform the church leaders of the problem with 700 mhz and recommended disconnect now and replace.

It's cheaper to replace several 700 MHz radios than it is to pay the fine for one of them.

Should have recommended disconnect 3 years ago (or was it longer?)

OTOH, has anyone heard of anyone actually getting fined for operating 700MHz wireless mics?

Couple of years ago in Vegas, Verizon complained about a 700 user in their newly purchased band.  Not only was the venue fined for each of the 10+ mics but the FCC agent sprayed the RX black with paint to prevent further use.
