We are playing some small places, and I was wondering if we could mount the light bar on top of the 722, and secure it with the fly hardware on top of the box. I've searched this forum, online, etc, and I haven't found anything.
Thoughts? Suggestions?

You can Do that, pretty easily. Cut a piece of plywood the same shape as the top of the 722. drill 4 holes in it to match the flypoints, then attach using proper bolts. Mounted to that piece of ply would be an external speaker top hat. This allows you to pop a short pole on top of the speaker.
The thing that I would worry about is the extra weight up high will make the stack more prone to tipping. You will want to strap this thing together with some good ratchet straps, ESPECIALLY if you are outside.
FWIW, if you have to use a strap everytime anyway, I would forego mounting the plate to the flyware and just use the strap to keep it all together. This way if you use different speakers down the road, you don't have to make up a new plate.

722s are pretty lightweight, I don't know if I would trust mounting anything but a few lightweight DJ fixtures, unless you use straps as Tim mentioned.

BTW, I just saw this on CL. These guys built their own cabs, but it gives you the main idea.

I never thought of putting a pole mount up there---man, I'm just not with it!
Thanks for the link of the pix, that's exactly the same thing I was thinking of.
I also hadn't considered the weight. I think we'll be okay, as we're rolling with a Chauvet 4Bar Tri system. Although I haven't actually put my hands on them, they appear to be pretty lightweight. Will keep you guys posted, thanks SO much!

We use the Chauvet Colorstrips with half couplers mounting two of the strips to a USS lighting crossbar. We use a short piece of tubing to go into the top hat mounts in the top of our speakers.
We can also use them on regular light stands.
They only weigh about 10 pounds. No big deal...:)

Even with the 4Bar system. The side loading from a nice breeze could topple your speaker stack. I have had the big Ultimate lighting stands blow over before. I would strap it EVERYTIME you go outdoors.

I've also thought about the color strips, but the 4bar seems so simple. And it offers good brightness, and flexibility of being able to point things as we need. I figure when we have more cash, we can use these on a backline. And thanks for the tip on how you set yours up.
And yeah, I know I'd be so scared of gear toppling over! Straps will be there!

Light stands are dirt cheap. Why not eliminate the chance you'll have an accident and use tri-pod stands that can be put wherever you want safely. Not to mention you're taking a quality cabinet and making it look pretty Mickey Mouse. There are so many other options mounting the lights to the top of your speakers just doesn't make sense.

Bob, the OP was concerned about not having enough space to safely use tripods when playing in extremely small spaces. I've done many shows where no matter where you try to place everything, there is always a tripod leg sticking out to pose a trip hazard.
My thought (and suggestion) was to use an external top hat strapped to the top of the speaker. No modifications are required....

Take this speaker mount and screw it to a piece of plywood about the same size/shape as the 722 and you have a good place to put your lights.
