Title: Antenna stands
Post by: Joe Calabrese on July 02, 2018, 06:08:32 PM
I'm looking to get some new stands. Must be 10'+ tall, road worthy and pack up somewhat compact.  What models have you had good luck with?

Right now I a using an Ultimate speaker stand. They go high enough, and aren't too heavy. I have also used Matthews C Stands, they go higher, but are heavy.

The Ultimate TS88 or TS99 speaker stands are their taller-than-standard (TS-80 or TS-90) if you need a bit more height.  Same stand construction, larger base circle, taller.  I like the 90 series with the Tele-lock lift assist.  No pins. Control the speed of descent.

What adapters convert a speaker stand to a mic threading?

Judging from the locking knobs, those could be Matthews stands (https://products.msegrip.com/collections/c-stands/products/60-c-stand-w-spring-loaded-base) painted black.

K&M Overhead stands work well.
20800 goes to 3.1m (just over 10'), not much bigger than a standard K&M tripod when collapsed.
If you need more the 20811 goes to 4.4m (over 14') but it's bigger and more than twice as heavy.

shure markets their own antenna stand s15a goes about 13 ish feet up solid base ... usually just throw 1 sandbag on it ... for something more heavy duty could look at the afore mentioned matthews stands ... search combo stand they are a lighting stand you will need to fashion some kind of spud adapter their maybe something existing not sure

I own a couple of the Shure s15A, fully extended they are a little too unsteady for my tastes. The clutches from mast section to mast section are finicky and sometimes slip.   I use them for a special mic placement,  they might be ok with a 1/2 wave antenna, but anything heavier or with a large wind profile, I think I would pass.  I am already looking to replace them with the Manfrotto.

I own a 3 pack of the Manfrotto stands that Henry mentioned. They clip together and fit in a bag(not included) for transport. They get the height I need when it is required, light weight and solid as can be with a sand bag at the base.  It has a single mic thread at the top so I typically clamp to the pole if I want more than one antennae per stand.  I’ve seen the Shure stands at a music festival recently with one of the bands and it didn’t seem like it was nearly as solid.
