Sorry if my following question has been asked/answered in the sticky topic above but it's so long I get lost redaing it all Very Happy

I can probably only make it up on Monday night during the live entertainment portion of the show, will there still be equipment set up on display to look at?

Thanks,
Vinny

Title: Bill Hanley talk on Monday night
Post by: David C Nickerson on May 12, 2009, 12:24:01 AM
Bill is hoping for some help in pulling together his presentation to make sure he's sharing topics of interest to the audience.  He asked me to ask what folks would like to hear him talk about.

Got any questions you'd like to ask?

Bill is working to dig up some photos and other content to make it all it can be, so what would you like to hear Bill talk about?

Thanks,
David

Of course the obvious would be the system for Woodstock.  I have heard lots of bits and pieces over the years about what was used-seen various photos etc, but would like a little run down on the gear.

And probably more importantly-how it was all pulled together-what did it really sound like (I REALLY want a time machine to go back and listen to my old gigs), what were some of the issues (grounding-power-stage SPL) and so forth.

I am very much looking forward to his talk.

I thought I was going to have a vertical Monday night gig that was going to keep me away from the Demo Fest.

The Monday gig fell through, but it seems that now the expenses of a child graduating from high school (AP tests, Prom Tickets, yada, yada, yada)and entering college ($!) have depleted my cash reserves.

As much as I'd love to go to this thing, I just don't see how I can swing it.

I thought of asking another attendee if they'd be so kind to share their room Monday night, but I snore like a cow, and I'd never put anyone through that.

I am off to collect soda bottles and aluminum cans.

Maybe I can work something out.

Dave if I weren't stuck on the day job gig from hell out of town, I'd give you a lift to the get together.  I'm bummed as it is that I can't make the festivities.

Thanks Jeff.

It seems that Keith Clark, who had originally planned to attend the event, can not make it. The powers that be have decided that the event should be properly covered by PSW, and have stepped up with the support necessary to get me to this event.

They are good like that.

I'll see everyone on Monday afternoon.

Vinny,

That's half the point! The band is there to provide inputs to our mixing consoles, there will be plenty of toys on display, some of them in use, some of them just turned on.

Does anyone have a quality automixer we could borrow for the panel discussion(s)?

The Inn just called to tell me that they've decided to lower the rate for anyone in our party TO JUST $49 PER NIGHT!!!!  So, Sunday, Monday Tuesday, whatever you want to stay, it's ONLY $49 PER NIGHT!!!

I hope this helps.

Perhaps an 01V96 can be set up with each mic noise gated and set up to "duck" under the moderator's mic? I'd be happy to supply a digital mixer preset up that way - just have to tape over the "B" word on it Laughing.

Gated "automixing" sounds pretty horrible, and "automixing" without compensation for the number of open mics is not something I want.

I thought with the gates set for a 6-12db reduction and a one second hold time it might be a bit better than nothing? I think I understand the "compensation" part but it seems to be only needed if you are near max GBF - how deaf are yous guys Laughing? I also understand a "quality" automixer would hold open the last used channel. Also be flexible as far as prioritizing channels but I'd think a single "moderator priority" would be good enough for us? Anyways after reading up a bit on these I'm surprised no-one coming has one Smile.

If you are in a near feedback situation gating will have no effect on overall system gain if all mics are in use. It will also be pretty easy to hear it working. No net gain for a net loss in quality. Not a good trade off to me.
Quote:

Gain compensation makes the overall gain of the system the same no matter how many mics are open. There is no change in background level, and if you have enough GBF for 1 mic you have enough for 20. The good automixers use this system, and are seamless in operation.

No, a "quality" automixer will keep the system gain at 1 no matter how many mics are active. If the panel is so unruly that you need a moderator priority the good mixers let you set a "weighting" threshold to give more priority to the mics you want.

We expect to have a panel on automixing at the AES Convention this October, led by our own Bink Knowles. Come and find out how these things work.

You are mistaken about what I was saying. My experience is that GBF is always a factor in panel discussions. Background noise is also a factor, and a good automixer will take care of both. I try to never do a panel without an automixer.

I've also spoken with Shannon and Carlton from Stage Research who will come up after the Broadway Sound Master Classes this weekend in NYC to share SFX with us.

I figure the Mfg Reps are gonna outnumber us so we can have them pro-wrassle it out tossin' equipment at each other while the panel critiques the relative aerodynamics of the equipment - could get pretty loud Laughing.

Me too. Last year at AES Bink had to chastise me repeatedly for not speaking on mic. The year before where we did the corporate audio panel and all just sat in a circle off the stage was much more comfortable. Or maybe that was 4 years ago.
