I bought a windscreen for a condensor microphone used on a desktop stand, it is not very tight around the microphone, does it need to be to keep out wind noise if it was used outside?
The brand is MXL WS-001

Okay. or were you joking...

Well OK. As long as it's not so loose that the wind blows it off. ;D

Hmm I think a strong wind could cause it to move and strong enough (too strong to be recording at all) would blow it off

Mr. Rees was responding in the manner of your original signature.

Hello,
If in canada, use an elastic or a "rubber" (for the old timers) and in the States and elsewhere, use a rubber band to hold the windscreen on. If it is so windy that you're picking up wind noise, then:
a.) change to a different mic with tight pickup pattern & windscreen (probably a shotgun mic) and make certain that you're recording "with" the wind
b.) get a Rycote (brand) fur/fuzzy/mouse (whatever your area calls them) that'll fit over your existing mic.
c.) wait for the wind to die-down

As was said above, loose is good, as long as it doesn't blow off. As the wind hits the windscreen, it gets stopped by the foam and makes some soft noise in the outer layer of foam as the wind air decelerates. The farther this soft noise is from the mic diaphragm, the more effective the windscreen will work. That is why most windscreens leave some space between the inside of the windscreen and the outside of the mic grill. For more extreme conditions, a "blimp" is used to keep the windscreen foam and fur even much further from the mic diaphragm.

Great, just realized I didnt think about the blimps they obviously leave a lot of space around. I guess my main concern is if wind is angled right to get in under the bottom of the windscreen where it is not tight against the grill

Yes, the windscreen should be attached securely to the mic below the grill so it does not move, fall off or leak wind. This is done by design for windscreens made for specific mics. Generic windscreens may need some sort of binding if they are too loose at the base. Just leave as much room as possible between the inside of the windscreen and the outside of the grill.

Yes, absolutely, but, a blimp wll not accomodate the mic he referenced in the photo. And, the Blimp would cost 3-5 times the cost of that MXL mic.
If he'd need a blimp and fuzzy, he might want to buy a better mic too.

I just mentioned the blimp as an example to illustrate a general concept which, combined with common sense, should enable him to solve his problem very simply as you and Hal suggested.

Bead of caulk around the bottom of the wind screen to seal it. Please dont really do this I am trying to add some humor. A good application for Polish Chrome
