Title: "Your Generator Arrived"
Post by: Jamin Lynch on October 16, 2020, 06:26:32 PM
This showed up for a church festival we are doing tomorrow.

I guess I'll remove the California plug and tie into the lugs  :o  They don't look much better but should be OK

Yikes!  Hopefully that's an attendee's contribution to the event and not a paid rental.

I can hear it now, you question the condition of the receptacles and generator tech says something like "the last guy used them with no problem" or "we tested everything at the shop
before we brought it out"

What I can see of the breakers those are looking a little weathered as well.

Not confidence inspiring at all.  I wonder, how corroded are the parts we can't see?

What they won't say, is the "last guy" was 10 years ago....
I'd refuse it as unreliable. or UN-connectable.
Chris.

To quote the above, Yikes!
Storing their equipment under water probably isn't the best option.

Agreed, it's obvious that it gets no maintenance at all.

Almost every trailer mount Sunbelt generator I've ever seen.

It sounded pretty bad. It started smoking and the voltage dropped a couple of times which caused the mixer to shut down. After a while the generator just gave up and shut down completely.

We had the rental company bring us another one. They were 1 1/2 hours away. :o Fortunately, we had plenty of time. The replacement was much newer and worked perfectly.

So why didn't we get that one the first time?  >:(

I have refused generators in the past. It is your right as a customer.
If I figure it's failure will end up hurting my rep, out she goes.
But then, I am usually in an urban sting,  where I can draw from 3 or more suppliers.
First look at one like that, I'm on the phone.....

They sent you a crappy one before the real one - so you could get a hefty discount off the real one.

Predictable result from generous application of water to put out the fire from the last time it was used.

Wonder how long that sat underwater during one of the hurricanes over the last few years.
I guess cheap used cars aren't the only things you have to worry about as flood salvage!

My gawd!  No way I'd ever connect anything to that POS.  Unsafe for personnel and equpiment.

It would probably harm animals, vegetables, and minerals, too!

This is one of those things you see and wonder why the rental company hasn't removed it from service.  Forever.

was talking with one of my techs this past weekend...this topic came up given all the outdoor stuff going on that tries to avoid the headcount restrictions of indoor events...we both recalled a very high end wedding we had worked...one of those $250k weddings..2 charter buses to bring guests into the property, live band, dj, 200 seated, etc...the event planner promised generator..when we got there, instead of a nice rental unit like we typically see, he had a beat up honda 7500..told him I could back down to half my PA and still be pushing the brownout limit for the band..never mind the 2 guitar amps, bass amp, keyboard rig that the band needed..guy scrambled an extra 3500 honda and we did what we could to make the night happen.

Talking about LARGE generators this is something that happened at work a few months ago.
I get into work about 9:30 to scenes of darkness finding out that a farmer had gone through an underground cable early that morning (some guests heard a very loud bang) supplying primarily the holiday park I work at, did extensive damage to the DNO's equipment. Power would be off but should be back by 11AM or so manageable, unfortunately the time power would be back on got later and later.
By 4:00PM it looked like power was back but the vacuum I was using (A Numatic Henry) was clearly down on power so went back to using one of the generators we had hired (basic units with no voltage regulation, fine for a vacuum cleaner. I having been tasked to go around in a van with a driver, vacuum cleaner and generator vacuuming caravans where using the broom wasn't going to be satisfactory), got back to base and the lights were flickering and one of our washing machines just displayed a blank screen, so power was still not right.

Turned out the damage that had been caused was much worse than originally thought and it ended up with guests/owners being given glow-sticks for the night from the DNO and it wasn't till the next day that something was done, what ended up being done was the DNO having to get a large diesel generator in (on a trailer with an extra fuel tank), which had to power not only ~700 caravans but the entertainment complex, touring shower block and water pumps as well!
This ended up staying for just over a week and I hate to think not only how much diesel it consumed in that time but how much it must have cost not just to fix all the damage but on supplying the generator (A Power Electrics unit),luckily we were running at lower than normal capacity at the time.

As for having enough rig for the gig JMJ had an impressive generator set up for the Concert pour la Tolerance in Paris, https://youtu.be/AsG9vYuuIg4?t=317 6MW of generation capacity if my limited French is to be believed (set million watt).

It really is best to call the power/gas/phone companies before you put a shovel in the ground....
Mechanical or otherwise.
That's Sept Million, 7MW
That's a LOT of power. I heard mention of a village of 1,500 "homes", average population 6,000 punters.
At that level of operation, I'd expect 1 Genny to be a hot-spare.
Chris.

Yes my French ain't that good  :D , amazing that they allowed a science program to go behind the scenes of a concert of that magnitude (1.5mil est. attendance), and amazingly enough despite my lack of French I do find C'est Pas Sorcier to be quite entertaining.
And as for the farmer, he's been there a while as I understand, I wonder if his insurance had to pay out (it would have cost us a packet in generator hire and lost revenue form the shop/bar/restaurant Etc.) and if so what his new premium is! It also caused us to have low water pressure as they had to turn off most of the pumps for fear of damage (they are not cheap!).

This is not our first major incident, we had a small landslide up in the woods above the park that severed the main (as I understand) water line on the first day of the Easter holidays (it was just luck that our site manager has been here so long (30+ years) he knew exactly where the fault would be and started digging and water was back on by the end of play).
Also on the first day of the new season (mid March) having a cold snap and pipes freezing, had to send people away and it caused no end of pipe/boiler damage, the annoying thing is that before we opened and we were doing the preparations for the park reopening we had the same situation, it ended up with 4 people going out in two teams where one would turn the water on, then the other would shout to turn it off if there was a leak (there were a few leaks, mainly from boilers).

Yes, got my numbers muddles up, give hello, thankyou and 1-10 is all then French I really know it had to happen!

Even more impressive somewhat was his Docklands concert, 42! generators for 5.2MW total load, inc. two 240kVa generators on the floating barge/stage. See the attached L+SI from Sep' 88, starting from page 17, goes in to great detail inc. stage plots.

JMJ:  I've got this splendid new spectacle show, lots of pyro and lasers, orchestra, huge stage....

Production manager:  Okay, we've done this before.

JMJ:  I'm doing it October, on the water at Royal Victoria Dock.

PM:  Oh my.

It wasn't supposed to be in October, you can thank Newham council for that, on the second night he quipped "Well we have had a few difficulties but FROGS LIKE RAIN!"
Here's some video of the concert and some making of stuff.

Rick Wakeman was just as mad, when finding out that Wembley Arena was set up for an ice rink for a different attraction he decided to present his concert for the album "King Arthur" as an ice pagent, initially the record company though that having Wembley set up as an ice rink would be to their benefit as it would put a stop to Wakeman's ideas of grandeur, oh boy they were wrong!

That was possibly the wettest gig I've ever done or been at as a punter it rained pretty much non stop for days either side of the actual event. I was stuck monitoring a radio OB transmission node on the water front NOT fun  :-\ :-\

Not fun but think, I don't think anything as amazing as Destination Docklands will ever happen again.

Would still have loved to be there despite the rain (I am British after all!) but as I would only been a couple of months old not really a possibility,

As for stories about the event, he bloke who was a sales rep for Elka in the UK and who had sold Jarre his first Synthex lent him one for the concert, it came back full of water!

I have seen Jarre fairly recently, though, at Cardiff as part of his Electronica tour, and very good it was (used to excellent effect moveable mesh video walls on the front of the stage with a fixed one at the back, created some nice 3d effects) . Even my dad liked it and he was only there as it was part of his birthday present to me.

Got to admire Jarre's determination though, most other people would have sensibly thrown in the towel, instead he needed lots of them!
