I work with a local balalaika orchestra. Hammer has their CD.... They're hosting the big convention this summer and we'll have a little over 120 players in the massed ensemble. Live sound and recording. Lotsa fun, you betcha. There are actually more different sizes at the convention than are represented in the local orchestra. Now, now. No in-fighting over the proper channel assignment for the butler. Frankly, it would be far more appropriate to put staff in the Floor Mic section, anyway. Children belong with the hanging mics, obviously (though it takes much gaffer tape to keep them there). Post by: Scott Smith on April 29, 2010, 11:21:10 AM

Motorola uses Big Endian, where the MSb (always on the left) is bit 0 and the LSb (always on the right) is labeled bit 7, 15, 23, 31, 63 depending on native word length. Intel uses Little endian, where the LSb (always on the right) is bit 0, and and the MSb (always on the left) is bit 7, 15, 31, 63 depending on the word length. (I cannot think of a 24-bit Intel machine; Motorola 56k-series DSPs are 24-bit devices.) Accessing full words of native length is trivial. Accessing a specific byte in, say, a 32-bit word is less so. Does anyone remember octal notation? 12-bit word lengths? Oh, yeah, the classic book, "Soul Of A New Machine" was about Data General. -a Post by: Mike Christy on April 30, 2010, 12:37:15 PM
Yup, By Tracy Kidder, worked on those proto-types, final code name for the machine was Eagle, skunk works at first. All PAL driven, miles of red ECO wire on them too, dead-bug city, The first program they got to run on it was Adventure, text version, Adventure morphed in Zork...xyzzy... Lots of crashes, lots of timing/race issues, I cant recall the sim, Zycad maybe... then they wrote a SW emulation of Zycad. Took days to run sims... Seems like yesterday. Post by: Bill Burford on April 30, 2010, 12:58:22 PM Its a 8 channel mackie into a driverack pa into three IT8000 bottom-amps and three IT6000 top amps into 6 VT4880A's accross the floor and two 6 stacks of VT4886 tops. Its set up at a cattle ranch in Texas aimed at a bunch of Bulls. Before the show starts, we put a bunch of cows in heat in a wooden cage in the middle of the arena. * This mixer has stereo effects in the effects loop which can be used to alter the sound. channel 1 and 3 are panned hard left. channel 2 and 4 are panned hard right. channel 1 and 2 inputs are: stereo remix loop of Phil Anselmo assorted screams from all Pantera albums. channel 3 and 4 inputs are: stereo remix loop of the most beutiful vocals from famous pop/r&b female vocalists. all vocals still have the accompany instrumental music. the engineer wears a kevlar body armor underneith a full suit of 16th century body armor even though he stands behind a reinforced fence that the bulls are not supposed to be able to break through or hurdle. a near by stream flowing down hill is cleverly diverted using 6 inch pvc mounted on wooden frames to turn a miniature wooden water wheel using skateboard bearings "reds" to reduce friction. The waiste water is diverted back to the stream. The water-wheel has a sprocket from a CR-125 (rear wheel) mounted on it with a chain to turn another sprocket near the mixing board (above it) which is roughly half the size. the board sproket turns a make-shift cam-shaft which depress spring-loaded dow-rods mounted directly onto the board. These dow-rods essentially alternate the mute buttons on the first 4 channels such that 1&2 alternate muting when 3&4 are unmuted and so on. the board is set to a nice loud level-- sound is good for the target zone. channel 5 has a lav mic mounted inside the body-armor so the engineer can say "Gitty UP HORSEY!!!!!!!!" into a slap-back delay. This reallly pisses off the bulls. by hand-braking the water wheel, the music can be adjusted to the desired mute-rate. LET THE MADDNESS BEGIN Post by: Tom Reid on April 30, 2010, 01:12:45 PM

I read that book when I was in highschool - it was fascinating. It's interesting and a little sad so see the old giants either not so giant, or dead. I live here in the land of Cray and Control Data and there isn't much left. My Dad is a metalworker and did some of the liquid cooling manifold work for one of the Crays - not sure which model - Cray 2 era, I believe.
