I work with a local balalaika orchestra.  Hammer has their CD....
They're hosting the big convention this summer and we'll have a little over 120 players in the massed ensemble.  Live sound and recording.  Lotsa fun, you betcha.

There are actually more different sizes at the convention than are represented in the local orchestra.  And other wind instruments plus a full percussion section......

I got Donna the Buffalo "and friends" (?) sprung on me about six hours ago as an "add on" for today at 10pm to midnight at Merlefest.  It's guaranteed to be channel 1-46 of fuck!, I've been through this with them before. I don't hate 'em, It's just the inevitable chaos that makes me and my crew cringe.

I need to raise my rate.

as of late, I use one really good overhead capacitor mic.  Way better than a Neuman.  and I use the BEST compressor and eq ever for it.  I cut 1.6 K and 4K and boost 400 and 160 and 20 K.  Its literally perfect sound.  No one can touch it.  (Never have bands with more than 14 members though)  I use it to pick up vocals, instruments, drums.  I really hate going direct but sometimes (christmas only) I'll DI all the guitars and just mic the keyboards.

just kidding.  I do know of a guy who has literally been talked down in price so far that he literally sets up one vocal mic and one kick mic--- thats it! ha ha... and he still used a snake! HAA!  so funny.  I laugh about that every time I remeber seeing it (out of town visit revealed this to me).  I think it was 75$'s for 3 or 4 metal bands in a wearhouse.  This guy likes metal.  oh yeah, two powered speakers.  (he uses SRX 728's and the old 4732 tops for a real gig and he's not too shabby)

for small/portable shows, channel 6 is pretty much always bass (DI)
and 7 and 8 are my favorite channels for left and right guitar.

Now, now. No in-fighting over the proper channel assignment for the butler. Frankly, it would be far more appropriate to put staff in the Floor Mic section, anyway. Children belong with the hanging mics, obviously (though it takes much gaffer tape to keep them there).

Who needs gaff tape?  My thought was to utilize a running bowman knot to attatch a hanging mic cable around each child to keep them up there.

I know, I know... there is the whole "murder/illegal" thing, but I think this would be a perfect example of "by reasons of temporary insanity" Laughing

Wanna really go nuts?  Try being in a show scheduled for a six month run (9 shows a week), then having it extended for another three months when they couldn't get the next show up and ready......  In the band, but on stage so no fidgeting, refreshments, etc......

At least at the console I can scratch my ass if I want to.

And one last time....

1-4  Violence
2-8  Second violence
9/10 Violets
11/12  Jellos
13/14  String beans
16-19  Wends
20-22  Bras
23/24  Pertussin
25-28  Grand pannini
29     Fat lady

You know you're in trouble when the guitar player picks up his axe and it whooshes like a light saber before he can strap it on.  Then when he goes to play it you get 2k through a lesli.

You could be right, but we currently only have one RE20. We figured we could easily clamp the beta 98s onto the vacuums if they're moving around or use 57s on stands if they're not.

In 32 bit architecture machines, DEC use to have the MSB bit labeled as bit 0, Data General had MSB labeled as bit 31, DG swapped them around so not to infringe on DEC's IP, since the founders of DG (DeCastro) came directly from DEC.

FWIW... Very Happy

Motorola uses Big Endian, where the MSb (always on the left) is bit 0 and the LSb (always on the right) is labeled bit 7, 15, 23, 31, 63 depending on native word length.

Intel uses Little endian, where the LSb (always on the right) is bit 0, and and the MSb (always on the left) is bit 7, 15, 31, 63 depending on the word length. (I cannot think of a 24-bit Intel machine; Motorola 56k-series DSPs are 24-bit devices.)

Accessing full words of native length is trivial. Accessing a specific byte in, say, a 32-bit word is less so.

Does anyone remember octal notation? 12-bit word lengths?

Oh, yeah, the classic book, "Soul Of A New Machine" was about Data General.

Yup, By Tracy Kidder, worked on those proto-types, final code name for the machine was Eagle, skunk works at first. All PAL driven, miles of red ECO wire on them too, dead-bug city, The first program they got to run on it was Adventure, text version, Adventure morphed in Zork...xyzzy...

Lots of crashes, lots of timing/race issues, I cant recall the sim, Zycad maybe... then they wrote a SW emulation of Zycad. Took days to run sims...

My new board layout is as so:
Its a 8 channel mackie into a driverack pa into three IT8000 bottom-amps and three IT6000 top amps into 6 VT4880A's accross the floor and two 6 stacks of VT4886 tops.

Its set up at a cattle ranch in Texas aimed at a bunch of Bulls.  Before the show starts, we put a bunch of cows in heat in a wooden cage in the middle of the arena.

* This mixer has stereo effects in the effects loop which can be used to alter the sound.

channel 1 and 3 are panned hard left.  channel 2 and 4 are panned hard right.

channel 1 and 2 inputs are:  stereo remix loop of Phil Anselmo assorted screams from all Pantera albums.

channel 3 and 4 inputs are: stereo remix loop of the most beutiful vocals from famous pop/r&b female vocalists.

all vocals still have the accompany instrumental music.

the engineer wears a kevlar body armor underneith a full suit of 16th century body armor even though he stands behind a reinforced fence that the bulls are not supposed to be able to break through or hurdle.

a near by stream flowing down hill is cleverly diverted using 6 inch pvc mounted on wooden frames to turn a miniature wooden water wheel using skateboard bearings "reds" to reduce friction.  The waiste water is diverted back to the stream.  The water-wheel has a sprocket from a CR-125 (rear wheel) mounted on it with a chain to turn another sprocket near the mixing board (above it) which is roughly half the size.
the board sproket turns a make-shift cam-shaft which depress spring-loaded dow-rods mounted directly onto the board.
These dow-rods essentially alternate the mute buttons on the first 4 channels such that 1&2 alternate muting when 3&4 are unmuted and so on.

the board is set to a nice loud level-- sound is good for the target zone.

channel 5 has a lav mic mounted inside the body-armor so the engineer can say "Gitty UP HORSEY!!!!!!!!" into a slap-back delay.  This reallly pisses off the bulls.

by hand-braking the water wheel, the music can be adjusted to the desired mute-rate.

you don't "get" cows in heat.. but you might want keep them separate during that time of the month.. separate from the bulls at least.

on a cattle ranch, you'd probably have cows and bulls, the cows tend to naturally go into heat at their own natural interval.

yes.. i have plenty of time on my hands today.. no gigs for a week.. but I am going to see one of my favorite artists tonight

I read that book when I was in highschool - it was fascinating.  It's interesting and a little sad so see the old giants either not so giant, or dead.  I live here in the land of Cray and Control Data and there isn't much left.

My Dad is a metalworker and did some of the liquid cooling manifold work for one of the Crays - not sure which model - Cray 2 era, I believe.  It's fun to have local connections, even if they are meaningless and obscure.
