So we are not that used to a lot of snow in these here parts Raleigh area- NC), but this afternoon has been rather a worry for me. Hubby was working at Duke university demonstrating equipment this morning and after numerous warnings on local radio and TV realized he needed to get out of there by noon. Didn't make it in time and the snow arrived in a big way.
The good news is he just called and is 2 miles from home - which might take another 30 -45 minutes....we live in a rural area.
Here in lies the problem. He finally got loaded up at 1.00pm because there was an announcement made to evacuate the school so everyone panicked and rushed to leave at the same time. He then couldn't bring his van to where he needed to from where it was parked to load his equipment due to all the vehicles leaving the parking lot and didn't actually leave till 1.00pm.
Apparently by the time he got out of the parking lot to the major highway, the police had closed every exit to allow emergency vehicles through. So although I get that access has to be kept clear for emergency vehicles, if all exits and major roads are closed, how does anyone get anywhere?
Add to that no-one knows how to drive in the snow here.
He then drove at 2-5 miles per hour to RDU airport to drop off his colleague and a journey of 36 miles in total has taken him over 7 hours - He saw upwards of 60 accidents on his way home !!- I hope no-one has been seriously hurt today........What a day.....

My brother called from Wausau Wisconsin area and they are at -25 still. DC has just started getting it.
Hope all are well. I will be going to hospital in AM to pick up wife from work. Again another bad drive.

Had cnf call 10AM with Atlanta - already people working from home, power and cell outages widespread.
Drove back from gig on Sunday AM through Franconia Notch NH, White Mt National Forest - god's country, god mountains, and god's weather. Ice, greasy, snow, wind, 15 degrees.
Fishtailed trailer only once then slowed to 45 and engaged 4WD. Only saw one mass-hole off the road being hauled out. Took this flatlander 3hrs to get home, dark green GMC is white covered with road salt.
The first dusting in December brings back all those winter driving skills, then we are set for the season.

Around here we had roads before there were interstates :-)
When it snows I avoid highways at all costs. Even if it is twice as far by back road I don't get stranded between exits.

He normally does just that but that was a problem too. Everyone else did the same thing and all the surface streets were blocked and worse than the highways. In the end ihe finally found the one highway he could that wasn't technically blocked because at least traffic was moving at 2 miles an hour.

Ha ha... I wish ! Problem is he has to use a van for work and it has to be one approved by the company. Yes...he drives a mini van - don't judge too harshly. He loves that thing - 230k and still going strong. Toyota Sienna. Fortunately it was so loaded down with gear, it stayed on the road - empty it wouldn't have stood a chance.
Now...back to that Tacoma....mmmmmmm

Bad weather(rain and/or snow/ice) makes me miss the F250 I used to drive... My Nissan Sentra('95 model with 13in tires...) isn't much fun on slick or water logged roads.

Debbie we are shut down over here in Cary too. I sent my crew home at noon but they decided to go out to lunch/got caught in the snow. One guy went from Cary to briar creek, took him 4 hours... Looks like my work call tomorrow is cancelled, hopefully we will be able to have our Friday shows.... Don't want to deal with a reschedule....

It's going to be 90 here this weekend and my wife and I will spent the day at the lake scuba diving. The roads should be pretty clear here but there may be a little traffic from all the pickup trucks pulling boats to the lake for a weekend of fun.

I do believe though that a lot of the problems could be eliminated by better organization by the powers that be and if indeed it snowed here more, maybe we'd have a plan !!

I slept overnight in a club booth last Saturday for the first time ever - and I've been at this for many years. I got home Sunday afternoon, and the roads are all clear now out here (PNW).
This club did only $800 last Saturday - on a night that usually brings in several thousand dollars.
I have yet to be paid. This is another fallout to this horrible weather across the nation. If you work this week, I hope you get paid for your efforts!

No, not at all. In a way we are more setup for these types of storms as they happen often so we understand how hard it can be. In the south your at the mercy of the states budgets to handle these once every 5-10 year large storms. Its never good for anyone.

I'm getting a little old for cold, but still not a big deal. My newest weapon is the Ariens Pro 28. Bought it 3 years ago after I wore out a tractor. 420cc and throws snow 50' or more all day long.
Oh, and it's got heated handle bars.

My favorite trick back when I worked regular hours (sorta) was to hang out at work for an hour or two after the mob left, then take the back roads. It was usually peaceful at work and I could get some reading done. Sometimes I would get something to eat close by and then most of the mess on the back roads were cleared up and I could drive home.
I guess I never was one to follow the crowd :-)

It allows you to clear a path as fast as you can walk, and with no motor and almost no moving parts, there is little to go wrong. Doesn't hurt your back, either, although your shoulders and neck muscles get a workout.
Not much maintenance either, although the leading edge of the shovel can wear out if you don't get the sacrificial blade edge protector and replace it when it wears down. It weighs 19#, according to the info, although it feels like less.
I used it over last weekend and cleared about 200' of street and a few pathways and driveways in about 2 hours. Only 3" of snow, though.
Good luck to those getting repeatedly hammered by the weather. I hope you get through it safely and with as little bother as possible.

My old 1996 Toro Power Shift's trany died a few weeks ago so I picked up a MTD 357 snow blower. 30 inch cut. 13 HP .

I wanted a large motor but light enough for the wife to handle as well. ( She does quite well I've found out. Says its fun? ... ) She just couldn't move the toro or gilson I have. I've found the less powered steering,hand warmers, joy stick chute adjustments a machine has the less chance of it breaking down after a few years. Still Nice machine you have there! ;)
Mine is rated at a 40 foot throw and the neighbors will attest to that.
I've still haven't found anything that will touch my 1968 Gilson 8-35. From what I've heard Gilson made this snow blower from a Roto Tiller. I know it will throw just about anything I've ran into through the years. Bricks, lawn gnomes, dog toys and line...... etc....Shear pins are large spikes now. 8) Its an old rust bucket but its my go to blower for those all slush and solid ice type storms. Fun machine even after all these years.
Snow blowers are just a winter location kind of thing!

Tonight's gig is cancelled and I am a happy camper. I really didn't want to have to drive in the snowy rainy icy mess out there, 14 inches of snow today, pouring rain right now, more snow coming in a few hours. Not to mention I spent over 2 hours moving snow today, my hands froze as the rain soaked through my gloves, and I really don't feel like playing right now. If I could have had some heated handlebars on my snowblower, I might feel differently! Maybe tomorrow if it is warm enough to work on my snowblower I can figure out a way to route the exhaust through the handlebars on its way to the muffler... Digital warmth!

My driveway is 3 cars wide, 250' long, up a very steep hill, then winds around the back of the house to the shed and a door. I took out the beast, cleared over a foot of snow off the driveway and cleaned 3 trucks in less than an hour.

Sometimes less is more. The Ariens is a 28" blower, but the 420cc (18hp ??) engine just won't quit. I needed something that would withstand the abuse, but not abuse me. It's a little heavy, but has a limited slip differential which make turns easy. My biggest pain is the 2 decks and steps up to the front of the house. Rob Spence has been over so he knows what I'm talking about there. I bought a little Toro electric shovel for that job and leave it on the porch plugged in all winter long.
No news papers tonight. The delivery idiots threw them onto the driveway and they got covered with snow. I found them with the beast.

Douglas, that Gilson reminds me of my grandfathers' Gravely setup.
Back in the 70's, 1 "Powerhead"' with many bolt-on attachements,
He had 100 acres on a mountainside, up in the Laurentians.
With the one power unit, he had a tiller, lawn mower, and 2 snow blowers. The larger one (probably 48" wide, and 36" high) was for regular snow, and the smaller one (maybe 24" wide, and only a foot and a half high) was for icey shit.
They worked.
Really worked.
I think it was a 15hp rig.
As a 12-17 year old, it was always a blast to be at their place when snow hit.
Dad had a 8hp Ariens. Somehow, our 2 car 20 foot driveway just didn't cut it after using Grandpa's "real" snowblower on a 400 foot long driveway.

Neighbor has a bobcat with a shovel on the front, He was out the last two nights and cleared the cul-de-sac we live on.

Happens here in TX all the time.. usually accompanied by snow or ice, temps as low as 15, then back up to 60-70's in a matter of days. The ALLERGY capital of the planet.

here our snowbanks are already over 5' tall. not sure that would be of much use :)

Yes, a 5' toss would be pretty significant. The shovel is designed for you to toss the snow by simultaneously moving forward quickly then stopping and pushing down on the handle, which moves the shovel up. You can toss the snow upwards and forwards, maybe as high as 3 or 4' and 6 or 8' forward. 5' high would be a big toss, and the tossing is where your shoulder and neck muscles get a workout. Definitely not the way your back gets a workout from a regular snow shovel.
We generally don't get snow like you do, so it'll be rare for us to run out of space to put the snow.
There are videos and testimonials on Amazon of people from places that get more snow than us saying how well it works for them. Don't know if it would work for you.

I don't have any pictures of the 30 year old snow blower I use to use when I lived in WI. It started giving me problems in the last few years. Rather than buy a new one, or keep fixing the old one, we decided to move to Las Vegas this year ;D. I really do feel sorry for the areas not use to snow. In WI we would get bad snow and roads would be clear the next day. Areas that don't get that much snow don't know how to deal with it, that makes 1/2 the snow twice as bad.
A few years ago we went to southern Washington state in December. We got there just after the worst snow storm in 20 years. I was driving around in a Prius like nothing was wrong the first day. I would drive around people in 4x4 SUV's! After a couple of days things got really bad. Since the city did not clear the roads and parking lots were not legally required to be cleared like back home they got REALLY bad. All that snow turned to compacted, rough, ice.
I wish I had had that 30 year old snow blower, I would have made thousands!

We ended up with another 6-7 inches last night. The banks in front are around 6 feet high now. New blower threw the snow from the other side up and over to the point where I had to snow blow the road to clean it up. Could do without all this wind now.... :(

So... for those of you who were battling the weather, any gig reports? Out here, the snow melted, the night of Valentine's Day was HUGE (on Friday this year... might have had something to do with it ;) ) and I got paid (!) for my awful snowy night last weekend :)

I don't mind snow as long as it is cold so it doesn't clog up the chute. Mine is a Kubota with a 3 cylinder diesel.

I got rid of my 21" Kubota when I moved from Minnesota to Houston. now I just like to visit the snow and cold. 4 more inches in Boston tomorrow? I hope my rental car has a scraper.

Mine is 50" :-). Now that the drive is frozen, it works great. I sure would love a paved drive though.
