Title: Pioneer XY-218HS
Post by: Helge A Bentsen on January 16, 2020, 02:37:26 PM
Any experience with this sub?

One company I work with has several of this sub. I find it a bit underwhelming, especially in single stacks. Dual stacks tend to sound better, haven't tried anything bigger. They are powered with Powersoft X4 using Pioneer supplied presets.

Is this a sub that performs best in bigger stacks maybe?

Quick glance implies to me that it should be as efficient as possible for likely very low grade drivers, but not play very deep.

I'd change the HP from 22Hz up to 35Hz, stack the subs 4 high per side, use Powersoft X4 amps, and consider that max SPL.  Phase align with the main speakers and go.

Pioneer had a rig on a Stageline as you walked into NAMM last year.  It was most underwhelming.

The Pioneer rig brought to impress at Art Basel just sounded bad.
.
I don’t know who is the ‘designer’ but it looks to be Richard Long inspired horn loaded dance stack...but when I checked it out a few years ago at Infocomm it was a marketing dream not a engineering solution.
Having worked with Richard I’m sure he would not be impressed

Indeed. I caught a bit of the PRS band demo on that stage.  FOH guy was clearly an EDM / DJ guy - Yo!  PRS Guitars does not require lead kick drum!   That rig was underwhelming, though it was up higher that I would have mixed it...  Hard to tell where the rig deficiencies and the engineer's deficiencies took over for one another...

Was it their Wave series stack? That was IP bought from Gary Stewart, who supposedly also worked with Long and went on to start GSA. He did sound for a number of nyc clubs after the RLA era.

I heard the Wave system at a club here in Berlin and was also underwhelmed, but the room also featured way too many stacks and resulting sonic mess. Those stacks are apparently very, very expensive and probably did not sell well, prompting Pioneer to develop their own stack, which would probably have been what you heard if it wasn't the Wave system.

No, it was with XY-3B mains.
I have a dualstack setup today, the whole rig sounds very old-school, but it works.
I suspect a pair of KF850 a side with subs would blow the whole Pioneer system into the middle of next week.

A little update on this.
We did some messing around, seems like there is multiple issues with this rig when you try to use it for live sound, not DJ stuff.

The subs definitely sounds better in multiples, lying flat on the ground or on stage. Stacking them on their end doesn't sound as good.
The 12" have a weird thing going for them, they measure ok on Smaart but sound a bit "dull". There is not a great amount of snap/impact/whatever you call it from the low section.

Just for fun we tried a XY-2 top with RS15 low(85-180hz), that had a very interesting sound quality and performance between the sub and the mid/hi package.

I think I need to investigate more around the lows in in this setup.
